James Leibold age 91 of Lawler died Thursday, September 26, 2024, at Linn Haven Rehabilitation & Healthcare.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2024, at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Little Turkey with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass.

Interment will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Lawler with Jacob Leibold, Walker Leibold, Don Burns, David Burns, Owen Burns, Ed Burns, and Mary Burns serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Ron Leibold, Laurie Leibold, Dale Christensen, John Praska, Tom Praska, Donna Praska, Diane Praska, and Donny Fisher.

Friends may greet the family from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2024, at the church prior to Mass on Friday.

James Francis Leibold, affectionately known as Jim to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2024, in New Hampton, IA. Born on December 17, 1932, to Irvin and Victoria (Kipp) Leibold on the family farm just west of Lawler, Jim’s life was a testament to the values of hard work, community service, and the joy of simple pleasures.

Jim’s early education at the local Catholic School in Lawler laid a strong foundation for the life of farming that he so dearly loved. His hands were rarely clean, because they were always busy working the land, caring for his animals, and nurturing the crops that fed his community.

In 1988, Jim’s life was beautifully woven together with Marilyn K. Gebel Burns when they united in marriage. Together, they shared a deep commitment to their family farm, working side by side through the seasons. They found joy in the rhythm of rural life, from the fields they tended to the polka dances and festivals they attended. Their love story was one of mutual support and resilience, especially as they entered their golden years and navigated life’s unexpected turns with unwavering courage and dedication.

Farming was not just Jim’s occupation; it was his heart and soul. He spent his days with livestock, milking cows, and caring for his laying hens with a sense of pride and purpose. His passion for farming was evident to all who knew him, and his farm was not only a place of work but also his sanctuary.

Jim had a unique hobby of growing watermelons, which he generously shared with everyone he knew. His kindness was legendary; it was not uncommon to discover one of his watermelons waiting on your doorstep, a silent gesture of friendship from Jim. His love for polka music was another thread in the fabric of his life, providing a soundtrack to many of his happiest moments.

For 30 years, Jim served as a dedicated volunteer fireman with the Lawler Fire Department. His commitment to his community was unwavering, and he stood ready to help his neighbors in times of need. Jim’s presence at farm sales was a familiar sight; he enjoyed the camaraderie and the opportunity to catch up with friends as much as he relished finding a new treasure for his farm.

Those who knew Jim would describe him as handy, always able to fix something that was broken, or create what was needed. His friendly nature made him a beloved figure in Lawler, and his thoughtful ways left a lasting impact on those he met. Jim’s endless smile, one that reflected a life well-lived and a heart full of joy, will forever be remembered by those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

In a life marked by the changing seasons of the farm and the enduring love of family and friends, Jim Leibold lived fully and left a legacy of warmth, generosity, and genuine kindness. His passing leaves a void in the fabric of the community, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. As the fields he once tended begin to harvest, we are reminded of the cycle of life and the beauty of a life well-lived. Rest in peace, Jim. Your memory will be cherished, and your life celebrated, as the fruits of your labor continue to nourish the lives of those you touched.

Jim is survived by his sister-in-law, Bernadette Leibold, his stepchildren Mary (Dale Christensen) Burns, David Burns, Don (Pam) Burns, Owen Burns, Ed (Bridget) Burns, nephews and nieces Ron (Laurie) Leibold, Joellen (Gary) Friedman, Michele (Steve) Lensing, Lori (Jeff) Brannan, Tami Bramow, Marie (Dennis) Robison, John Praska, Tom Praska, Donna Praska and Diane Smith. 

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marilyn on September 26, 2014; brother Don and sister Elverna (Gerald) Praska.

Memorials will be made in Jim’s memory to the Lawler Firefighters Foundation, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and other Lawler community nonprofits.
