Funeral arrangements are with Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton Imelda Rose Ungs was born April 11, 1926 in St. Lucas, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Teresa Hackman Ott, where she was baptized and later confirmed in the Catholic faith. She received her education at St. Luke’s School in St. Lucas, Iowa. She was married in 1948 to Reynold Ungs in Little Turkey. The couple made their home in Protivin, Iowa and had two children, Norma and Duane. Sadly their life together was cut short by Reynold’s untimely passing in 1954. Imelda raised her two children in New Hampton working at the Sweet Shop, IGA grocery and began work in 1972 at Sara Lee. Her foremost goal was to provide a good life for her kids, but she always made time for St. Mary’s Church and the Rosary Society. She liked playing cards, baking, gardening, reading and playing the slot machines at the boat. And she loved a good laugh. Mel always tried to do the right thing and treat others with respect. These and many other good qualities were passed on to her children. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include daughter, Norma (Ken) Buchwach of Leawood, Kansas and son, Duane (Jane) Ungs of Lansing, Iowa; four grandchildren, Angela (Jason) Morgan, Andrew Ungs, Abby and Allison Buchwach; and two great-grandchildren, Macy and Asher Morgan. Mel is survived by her sister, Loretta Drewelow of Waterloo, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers Arnold, Arthur, Albert, Alfred, Alvin, Joseph and Jerome, and two sisters, Margaret Williams and Adelia Coburn. The family sincerely thanks the staff at Villa St. Joseph for their kindness, care and vigilance. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. .
