Howard H. Tranel, age 88, of East Dubuque, Iowa, died Monday, July 26, 2010 at home with his family by his side.
Howard is the father of Sister Jean Tranel of Holy Family Parish in New Hampton.

Service:
Services will be heldat 10:30am Friday, July 30, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque.

Howard H. Tranel, 88, of East Dubuque, died at 3:40 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2010, at home, surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 30, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque, with his brother, the Rev. Daniel Tranel, officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by members of East Dubuque American Legion Post 787. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, where there will be a scripture service at 4 p.m. and members of East Dubuque American Legion Post 787 will meet at 7 p.m.
He was born on April 22, 1922, in rural East Dubuque, son of Edward and Lucille (Kieffer) Tranel. He married Lillian B. Hilby on Sept. 1, 1948, at Nativity BVM Catholic Church, Menominee; she preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 2006.
Howard was a veteran of the Army with a rank of 1st Lieutenant, serving during World War II.
He farmed in rural East Dubuque and was an agricultural insurance adjuster for more than 40 years, until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Mary's Parish and its Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Dubourg Assembly, American Legion Post 787 and a former member of the Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau.
Howard loved a good game of cards, especially euchre, and was a Chicago Cubs fan.
Surviving are two children, Sister Jeanne Tranel, OP, Pastoral Associate at New Hampton, Iowa; a son, Edward (Deborah) Tranel, of East Dubuque; five grandchildren, Jennifer Tranel (special friend, Chris Thyen), Maureen (Tim) Dietzel, Paul E. Tranel, Stephen Tranel and Michael Tranel; five great-grandchildren, Brittney, Brianna, Brandi and Brady Dietzel and Courtney Thyen; nine brothers and sisters, Ralph (Florence) Tranel, of East Dubuque, Richard (Donna) Tranel, of Monroe, Wis., Sister Norita Tranel, OSF, of Dubuque, Sister Betty Tranel, SSPS, of Techny, Marge (Gene) Jahn, of East Dubuque, Sister Jean Tranel, OP, of Naples, Fla., Dr. Ned (Virginia) Tranel, of Billings, Mont., the Rev. Dan Tranel, of East Dubuque, and Bert (Ann) Tranel, of Galena.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, the Rev. Dorrance Tranel and Roger Tranel; and a sister, Sister Danita (Connie) Tranel, OSF.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Dr. John Viner and staff, Dr. Roger Shafer and the Summit Center at Finley Hospital and to Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful care given to Howard.
