Hilda Lienau

Hilda M. Lienau, age 101, of Fredericksburg, Iowa died Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday November 6, 2009, at the Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg with Pastor Burt Williams officiating. Yvonne Lienau will be the organist with Faye Elliott, vocalist.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg with Jack Lienau, Jill Urness, Julie Chase, Lynne Niemann, Troy Nicklaus, Traci Nelson, Cathy Buhr, Lisa Leyh, Tricia Platte and Tom Lienau as pallbearers. Flower committee will be Gary & Helen Schulz and Jack & Marcia Schult.
Visitation will be held 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. Further visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Hilda Marie was born September 14, 1908, in Fredericksburg, Iowa the daughter of John and Amelia (Mattke) Steege. She was baptized on October 25, 1908, by H.W. Freytag and confirmed on March 25, 1923, by J. Krause both in the Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg, Iowa.
Hilda attended Pleasant Grove School in Fredericksburg, Township and graduated 8th grade in New Hampton, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Albert Lienau on September 14, 1926, at the Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg. The couple farmed in the Sumner and Fredericksburg areas. Hilda was a homemaker and helped with the farming. After Albert’s death on April 26, 1966, she remained on the farm until January 1967, when she moved into Fredericksburg. She then worked at the Sunrise Guest Home for 11 years, retiring in November of 1977. Hilda moved to Sumner Senior Housing in 2003, and to the Hillcrest Home in 2006.
Hilda enjoyed crocheting, making things for herself and her family, especially her grandchildren. She made all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren big sized afghans. She loved quilting parties with friends and neighbors, the sewing and tieing of quilts at church and also card parties. She was a member of the Ide While Club, the Euchre Club, The Shanghai Club and the Senior Citizens. She was a lifelong member of Peace United Church of Christ and also belonged to the Women‘s Fellowship. She always loved entertaining, especially birthday coffees.
Her love for her family will never be forgotten.
Hilda is survived by her son, Wayne (Yvonne) Lienau of Sumner; daughter, Mary (Leon) Nicklaus of Sumner; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren; daughter in law, Burnita Lienau of Fredericksburg; sister, Lena (Loren) James of Scottsdale, AZ; brother-in-law, Melvin Schultz of Sumner.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Albert on April 26, 1966; one son, LaVerne Lienau; three brothers, Elmer, Victor and Paul Steege; one sister, Clara Schultz and one granddaughter-in-law, Diane Lienau.
