Helen Marie Hults was born June 8, 1921, in Bradford, IA, the only daughter of Harvey and Kathyrne (Nicholson) Vanston. When Helen was five years old, her mother passed away and she was raised by her father and Grandma Nicholson, who lived next door. Helen attended school in Nashua, and was a 1938 graduate of the Nashua High School. After graduation, she took the exam to become a teacher. Helen was awarded a teaching certificate, and taught in rural country schools from 1938 – 1944. Helen grew up two houses away from Iven Hults. The two became a couple after Iven returned from World War II. They were married on April 15, 1945, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union, three children were born, Dan, David and Kathy. Helen spent time at home while the children were growing up. When they were older she started working for the Nashua Community School District, driving school buses. She retired from the Nashua Community School District in 1988, after driving for 23 years. She also spent ten years working in the office for Nashua Plumbing and Heating. Helen was very active in the community with many organizations. She was a VFW Ladies Auxiliary Golden Member, an active member at the United Methodist Church and various other church clubs. She was also active in both boy scouts and girl scouts, where she served as a den mother and brownie leader. Over the years she knitted many afghans and was especially busy sewing for her family with her Singer sewing machine. She was very fond of red cardinals and her favorite color was green. Helen was an amazing cook, and was always baking her special homemade bread.
