Helen Lucille Dooly was born July 30, 1918, in rural Nashua, Iowa the daughter of Carmi and Ruth (Sheldon) Till. She attended rural county schools in the Nashua area until 5th grade. Helen then attended school in New Hampton and graduated from the New Hampton High School in 1936. Upon graduation she enrolled in the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and graduated in 1938. Her first teaching job was in Ionia, and she spent the next seven years teaching in numerous schools around Iowa. Helen’s mother introduced her to Maurice Dooly, a young man that attended their church. Helen and Maurice were married on September 12, 1945, at the Union Park Methodist Church in Des Moines.
Shortly thereafter the couple moved from Des Moines, to a Bremer County farm where they farmed and raised their three children. Her beloved Maurice passed away in 1985. Shortly thereafter Helen moved to Waverly. During this time her youngest son Richard passed away from a heart attack. He was only 39 years old. In 2010, she moved into the Bartels Eichhorn Haus retirement center. Just a week ago Helen moved into Bartels Linden Place, an assisted living center. She enjoyed living in the Waverly community and had many friends.
Her hobbies include oil painting, ceramics, knitting, crocheting, and sewing quilting blocks for the Western Douglas Church. She was an avid reader, sometimes reading up to five books a week.
Helen is survived by one son, Carmi “Tom” (Ann Marie) Dooly of Cave Creek, AZ; one daughter, Joyce (Dennis) Miller of Waverly, IA; five grandchildren, Travis (Jo) Miller, Tracy (Tom) Nash, Danielle Dooly, William (Kristin) Dooly, and Victoria (Albert) Hampton.

Wow….this news really takes me back many years. I remember doing the March of Dimes (passing the folder from farm to farm)….Helen would always invite me in for a bite of cake or a cookie and we’d chat. What a charming lady~~~
Helen and Maurice used to visit my grandparents, Louie and Olinda Hagedorn who farmed not far from them in Bremer County. Helen was so very sweet. She and my grandmother would talk, and talk, and talk while Maurice and my grandfather would loudly discuss crops and the market. I’m so very sad to hear of Helen’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with Carmi, Joyce, and their families during this difficult time. Linda Hagedorn Finley, Arlington, TX
I’ll miss visiting with Helen on the phone. We played a lot of cards and shared good memories when she lived in her apartment before moving to Bartels. I enjoyed her company very much. I’m thinking of your family. Warmly, Betty Spears
I am so glad that I got to see your mother at Stan’s birthday party in September. I have to admit, Joyce, when you came to my table to tell me your mom wanted to talk to me, I at first did not recognize you. I got to thinking that my mother died 36 years ago March 14, 1977. Doesn’t seem it can be that long ago. I still have a doll your mom gave for a Christmas when I was quite young. My thoughts and prayers will be with you all. Hope I can get to see Carmi sometime here in Arizona. Love, Lucille
Joyce requested I be a pall bearer, I was honored to do so.
I still remember my folks and Helen and Maury getting together for playing cards and a spirited marble or other game.
I and Richard (Ricky) did many thing together in our youth.
As my dad posted earlier we have lost a lot of family members since 2013, that includes Stan, Doris, my mom a dad and many of the folks from the Republic area.
Hope are all in Heaven enjoying the Heavenly hosts.
Joyce, so sorry to learn of the loss of your mother. After hearing that I treasure even more the opportunity to visit with you and Helen at Doris and Stan’s birthday parties last year. I remember your mother telling me she and my mother were friends from college days. Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Jeannine ( Muench) Schlottman Mpls. Mn
Joyce, Carmi and all others…..As most of you know, Helen and I were first cousins. Sorry to hear of her passing and we send our condolences. For those who are not aware, Helen’s Mom Ruth Sheldon Till and my Mom Helen Sheldon Feuchtwanger were sisters. When we get to be in our senior years, the number of first cousins really dwindles. My brother Stanley and sister Lucille now have only four still living. We send our love and concerns. Ralph and Shirley Feuchtwanger and family
