Helen Olena Deeny was born November 12, 1919 in Pleasant Twp. Winneshiek County, IA, the daughter of Albert and Henrietta (Osmundson) Larson. She attended Country School #9 in Decorah until the completion of 8th grade when she started high school in Ossian, IA. After graduating high school she went to Midway Hospital in St. Paul, MN to complete her nursing training.
Shortly after completing her training she met the love of her life on the train, Bernard Deeny. Shortly after, the couple was married in Liberal, KS on October 22, 1944. To this union six children were born. After Bernard was honorably discharged from the service, the couple moved to Waucoma, Iowa where they spent the majority of their lives together. Helen was the bookkeeper at Deeny’s Standard Oil for many years, working along side her loving husband.
Helen loved flowers and gardening. Yellow roses and pink roses were always her favorite. Along with gardening, she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and making gooseberry jelly. Helen raised and took care of six children and they were her pride and joy. She helped them in every way that she could.
Helen is survived by five children, Dennis (Sharon) Deeny of Spring Branch, TX, Paul (Connie) Deeny of Charles City, IA, Tim (Caroll) Deeny of Calmar, IA, Cindy (Mike) Henderson of Urbana, IA and Patricia (Dick Palmer) Deeny of Bloomington, MN; eleven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three special nieces, Laura (Bernard) Dreesman of Cedar Falls, IA, Diane (Steve) Guberud of Spring Grove, MN and Deborah (Dave) Catron of Orlando, FL.
