Harlan D. Qualley, age 87 of Jerico, IA, died Monday, February 3, 2014, at his home. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton, with military honors by the New Hampton American Legion and VFW Posts. Burial will be at a later date. Friends may greet the family an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Harlan DuWayne Qualley was born September 24, 1926, in Ridgeway, IA, the son of Leon and Elsie (Anderson) Qualley. In 1930 his family moved to Frederika where he attended school, and graduated from Frederika High School in 1944. After high school he entered the Army where he served from 1945 - 1946. While serving in the Army he was stationed in the Philippines and was honorable discharged in 1946. After his time in the Army, Harlan moved to Jerico, where he was the buttermaker for the Jerico Creamery Association for 15 years. Upon his move to the area, he met the love of his life, Anna Mae Halvorson. The couple were united in marriage on October 2, 1949, at the Crane Creek Lutheran Church in rural Lawler, IA. To this union four children were born. Together they started their family businesses, Qualley Produce and Qualley Feed and Grain, Inc. The two ran the businesses together for many years. Harlan was a long time member of the American Legion and Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Family was always important to Harlan and he especially loved working side by side with his wife. Harlan is survived by his four children; David Qualley, Bruce Qualley, Sharon (Richard) Schuchhardt, Susan Geerts all of Jerico; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Anna Mae, on December 31, 2013; his parents; two brothers, Erwin in 1937 and his twin brother Hadwin in 1930; one grandson Benjamin Qualley in 1993.
