Glen Wilhelms

Glen E. Wilhelms age 83 of Sioux City, IA, formerly of New Hampton died peacefully of natural causes on Friday, October 14, 2016, in Sioux City.
A Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2016, at Holy Family Parish, New Hampton with Rev. Brian Dellaert celebrating the Mass.
Interment will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery with military honors by the New Hampton American Legion.
Friends may greet the family an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Arrangements are with the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton.
Glen Evert Wilhelms was born May 3, 1933, on the family farm south of New Hampton, the son of Alvin and Dorma (Schneider) Wilhelms. He attended rural country school near Williamstown and was a 1953 graduate of the New Hampton High School where he excelled in wrestling, placing third at State. He attended the University of Iowa for two years and served honorably in the United States Navy. On June 13, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton, he married Lorraine Hackman of New Hampton. To this union eight children were born. Glen worked as a mechanical drafter/designer his entire life. He had been employed by Bantam in Waverly, Goodyear Aerospace, Goodyear AZ, McDonnell Douglas Airplane Co. and Boeing Commercial Airplane. While in New Hampton, Glen served as Scoutmaster for Troop #248 for nearly 14 years. He continued his involvement with scouting for another 12 years after leaving New Hampton, serving as scoutmaster with troops in Columbus, NE, Yankton, SD, and Phoenix, AZ. As Scoutmaster he guided 22 boys and his seven sons in achieving their Eagle Scout Award. Additionally, Glen was honored by the Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service to youth and community. His daughter Lisa earned her God and Country Award in Girl Scouts. After retiring, Glen began a new adventure working with the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service, working in the Senior Corp division as a senior companion. He was an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeye sports. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and coin collecting.
Survivors include one daughter, Lisa (Troy) Baker of Phoenix, AZ; six sons, Alexander Wilhelms of Austin, TX, Terrence (Tammy) Wilhelms of Hastings, NE, Robert Wilhelms, Anthony (Lena) Wilhelms, Jeffery (Melinda) Wilhelms, Michael Wilhelms of all Phoenix; twelve grandchildren, Annie, Kari and Amy Baker of Phoenix, AZ, Ben Wilhelms of Gilbert, AZ, Brian Wilhelms of Spokane, WA, Tyler Wilhelms, Taryn Wilhelms, both of Omaha, NE, Trae Wilhelms of Hastings, NE, Jeffrey W. and Eric Wilhelms of Phoenix, Julie (Darren) Westendorf of Waverly, IA, and Scott (Stephanie) Denner of La Porte City, IA; five great-grandchildren, Braxten, Maddox, Cayson, Kambree, and Beckett Westendorf of Waverly; one sister, Rose Zabel of Sumner, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Thomas Wilhelms, his brother Harold (in infancy), and brother-in-law Wilbert Zabel.

Carol, I’m so sorry to hear of Glen’s passing. It was just 3 weeks before that Jim passed away. Glen had called me 2 days before to express his sorrow of losing Jim. They were long time friends from when they worked together. Jim called him his most persistent friend. We always looked forward to his calls. Praying for you and your family. Patricia Siazik
