Geraldine Philips King age 97 of Charles City formerly of New Hampton, died on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Cedar Health in Charles City.
Geraldine Philips King was born on November 24, 1911 to Cleveland and Myrtle (Shaffer) Phillips in New Hampton, IA. She attended school in New Hampton, IA and graduated from Grinnell College in 1932. On May 17, 1932 she was united in marriage to Clyde King in Lancaster, MO.
Jerry was a woman of many interests. Bridge was her passion, followed closely by quilting. She learned to quilt late in life and made quilts for each member of her family. Some of her other hobbies were basket making, knitting, tatting, sewing, and working with stained glass. She was an avid reader and usually had a jig saw puzzle to work on. Her home was filled with antiques, collected and refinished by her. She was a good cook and was still trying new recipes into her 90s!
During her lifetime, Jerry was active in the Charles City Arts Association, Mayflower Descendants, Colonial Dames, 19th Amendment Society, and the Charles City Library Board. She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years. Jerry was a lifetime member of City Improvement and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a 75+ member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter JQ.
Jerry is survived by her two daughters, Nancy (Kent) Hobert of Martinez, CA, and Bunny (Steve) Fox of West Des Moines, IA; four grandchildren, Timothy Hobert, Beth Hobert, and Amy (Tom) Beaty, Roger (Shelly) Fox; six great grandchildren, Timothy Hobert, Jordan and Anna Fox, Ryan, Julia, and Luke Beaty; one sister Ruth Philips Natvig Kilmer; one brother Robert Shaffer Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Clyde King and an infant son, Philip.

to Jerrys family Just a note to let you know we are thinking of you as we heard of Jerrys death. She was one special person and have lots of great memories of knowing her over the years. In fact, I even remember knowing her mother ( who was quite a neat lady, too) somewhere in my nursing career. Not too many weeks ago, we stopped to chat with her as we called on two others at the nursing home on Sunday morning. Reminisced about our bridge playing days at duplicate with her and also when Jan was invited to play a few times with her and Ellen Ellis. Other memories are special as I joined the church quilters after I retired and spent many hours doing stitches both on her quilts and on mine. Remember how excited she was making a baby quilt for a “preemie” great grandchild and reporting on the progress of the infant. I was fortunate to win the raffle at a cookie walk of her wall hanging which goes up every Christmas and will always remember her fondly as it gets displayed. what a gracious hostess she was-she insisted on our small group PEO come to her house a few years ago. We each brought a dish that started with our initial and surprisingly, it was quite balanced. In the 80s sometime, I had attended the convention in Denver. I asked her to go with me to the New Hampton chapter when I gave my report and she was a good sport and did so even though she had heard it all before. How fun it was to celebrate her 75th year with the special party and how great she looked. She loved having her girls around and asking about you always brought a twinkle to her eye. What a wonderful lady. I grew up next door to Jerry and Clyde. I have fond memories of both and will never forget the great experiences. I remember looking through the back window as Jerry knitted and did her puzzles. I will miss her spunk, brilliance and kindness. She and my mom Phyllis Kelly were great friends. Nancy and Bunny, I have enjoyed my time playing bridge with your mom and getting to know her better since we moved back to CC. She was quite a gal and will be missed. So glad to visit with you both the other day, my thoughts are with you. Linda
Dear Bunny Steve and Nancy Kent and family, We know you have many, many, fond memories of your wonderful Mother to cherish forever-as do sooo many friends. Both your parents have been in our familys lives for years yeats. What an acitve Jerry she was! She was a real gem to all who knew her! Thinking of you all as you, too, reflect on so many memories.
