Gerald Joseph Baumler was born August 17, 1931, south of St. Lucas on the Baumler family farm in rural Fayette County, IA, the son of Carl and Mathilda (Scholbrock) Baumler. He received his education at St. Luke’s School in St. Lucas. He was drafted into the United States Army on September 24, 1952, and served as an Artillery Surveyor stationed at Ft. Richardson, AK. Gerald was a great man and I have several fond memories growing up in Waucoma and helping around the farm. He did a lot for us after our father (Neil Baumler) passed away in 1975 which we were all very thankful that he was close by, providing a helping hand to our family and making sure we (my brothers and I) did not get into to much trouble. He was quite the outdoorsman and he took us fishing several times on the Mississippi, showing us the ropes and many times we brought back our limits not to mention that monster northern pike we caught with him over by Fredericksburg. I also recall the story of the moose he shot in Alaska too and the huge mount he had made that he proudly hung up in the house. When I was 13, I decided that I was going to start raising hogs on the home farm. He had a saw mill out at the farm, a trade he leaned from Grandpa Carl, and did a lot of construction work so he was first to volunteer to help convert our home farm barn, pole shed and feed lot into hog facilities which we used for several years and funded most of my way through collage. I remember how sore I was from running that jackhammer for two days busting up concrete to set those posts. I eventually moved to Houston but when I made it home to visit I would run into him having coffee from time to time there in Waucoma and he always took the time to chat a minute or two and brought me up to speed on how everyone in the family was doing. He was certainly never short of conversation. He will be greatly missed and we. my brothers and I, are thankful for his help in making us better men. Brian Baumler
