George DeVries

George H. DeVries, age 94 of Waverly, Iowa formerly of Plainfield died Monday, January 18, 2010, at the Waverly Health Center.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2010, at the First Baptist Church, Plainfield with Pastor Shawn Geer officiating.
Internment will be in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield with Larry Poppe, Bruce White, Charlie Dietz, Ben Kirchmann, Joe Lesan, and Ray Stickfort serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be his four grandchildren, Nicole Kirchmann, Renae DeVries, Lucas DeVries, and Emily DeVries.
Friends may call 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the funeral at the church.
George H. DeVries was born August 22, 1915, in rural Hardin County, IA, the son of Harry and Engeline (Saathoff) DeVries. As a young man he worked several years for the Civil Conservation Corp. On May 3, 1941, at the First Baptist Church Parsonage in Plainfield, George married Berneta Westervelt. To this union two sons were born. George retired in the early 1970’s after working for over 33 years with the Illinois Central Railroad. He also served on the Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years. His wife Berneta died on December 22, 1998 at the age of 81. George was later remarried to Evelyn (Boie) Schroeder on July 3, 2000. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and going to auctions and garage sales.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Waverly; two sons, Lavern (Regina) DeVries of Allison, Donald (Linda) DeVries of Plainfield; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and his first great-grandchild expected in May of this year; one sister, Henrietta (Raymond) Stickfort of Cedar Falls; two step-children, Wayne (Linda) Schroeder of Hawkeye, Brenda (Jeff) Weston of Australia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; three brothers, Ailt DeVries, Harry DeVries and William Smidt; one sister, Henrietta DeVries; a step-son, Alvin Schroeder.

Dear Regina and Lavern, Sorry to hear of George’s passing. I hadn’t checked the obits last week. Russ usually informs me, but he wouldn’t have known George’s name. Thinking of you at this time of your loss.

I was very upset when I heard that Uncle George had died. He has held a special place in my heart for my whole life. I have many fond memories of him and Aunt Berneta. We always loved going to their house because they had the COOLEST swing around! Uncle George always had a story to tell and something to show you that he had recently ‘picked up’ or found! I was sorry I could not make it to the funeral, but I was on-call at work that day and was unable to make it!
I was sorry to hear that Uncle George had passed away. Aunt Henritta Stickfort had notified us of his passing. I am sorry I will not be able to attend the funeral. My husband David and I are Wintering in Texas. I remember George well. My Dad Ailt and George looked a lot alike. They sure had some stories to tell. Again my deepest sympathy to the whole family. joyce
