Florence Catherine Boss, age 92, of Nashua, Iowa, passed away on April 7, 2026. She was born on July 6, 1933, in New Hampton, Iowa, along with her twin brother.  She weighed in at 1.5 lbs.  She had a strong will to live and was strong-willed all her life. She was the daughter of Clarence and Elizabeth (Elenz) Nehl. She lived a life marked by faith, kindness, humor, and devotion to the people she loved.

Florence (known to her family and friends as Flip) grew up in Alta Vista, Iowa, where she earned her education and began the journey that would shape her remarkable life. She carried with her the values of hard work, perseverance, and community that remained with her throughout her years. Those who knew Florence will remember her as a steady and dependable woman who approached life with grace and a warm spirit.

One night at a basketball game, Florence met Donald Boss, and that chance meeting became the beginning of a beautiful marriage. They were united in marriage on November 25, 1953, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Alta Vista. Together, they built a loving home and were blessed with three sons, Mike, Jim, and Dale.  Florence cherished her family deeply and embraced her role with love, patience, and strength. Don and Flip were blessed with 71 years of marriage.

As Don’s career in the lumber yard industry took the family to various towns throughout Iowa, Florence adapted with resilience and determination. During those years, she worked at several places and was known as a hard worker and a great employee. She brought the same care and dedication to every job she held, earning the respect of those around her through her reliability and kind nature.

In the late 1990s, the family moved to the Nashua area, where Florence continued to contribute to her community. She worked at the grocery store in Nashua as a meat cutter. Her presence was appreciated wherever she went, and she formed lasting connections with the people she met. Florence valued community and friendship, and she was fortunate to be surrounded by many caring people throughout her life.

Florence was a faithful Christian and a devoted Catholic who remained very active in her church. Her faith was a guiding force in her life and gave her strength through every season. She lived her beliefs through her actions, showing compassion, humility, and generosity to others. Her steadfast devotion was evident to all who knew her.

Florence had many interests that brought joy to her life. She loved quilting and crocheting and was an accomplished fisherwoman. She and Don also enjoyed traveling together across the United States and treasured the many beautiful places they were able to see. These travels created memories that she held close to her heart and spoke to the joy she found in sharing life’s adventures with her husband.

She also loved playing cards with friends and family and enjoyed the strong sense of community that surrounded her. Florence was blessed with a wonderful circle of friends, and she valued the time spent with them. Her funny personality and kind heart made her a joy to be around, and she had a way of making others feel welcome and appreciated.

In her later years, Florence was fortunate to remain at home, where she was cared for by many wonderful caregivers from the community. Their kindness allowed her to stay in the comfort of familiar surroundings, and she was grateful for the support and companionship she received. Florence returned that care with her usual gratitude.

Florence is survived by her son; Mike (Mary Jo Friedrich) Boss of Charles City, IA; six grandchildren, Brody (Susanne Hawke) Boss, Kelly (April) Boss, Tricia (Sam) Parker, Christina (Craig) Olesen, Jackie (Eric) Meyer, and Nicole (Ross) Monsen; ten great-grandchildren, Maggie, Maddie, Tommy, Jack, Marshall, Paige, Quinn, Brook, Cole, Blake; and one great-great-grandchild Kori; one brother, Joe (Lorraine) Nehl of Hawaii, four sisters-in-law, Sharon Nehl of Dunkerton, IA, Virginia Nehl of Waterloo, IA, Delores Nehl of New Hampton, IA, and Mary Nehl of Hazelton, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Don, in 2024; two sons, Jim and Dale Boss; eight siblings, Reynold (Delores) Nehl, Joanne (Wilfred) Waltz, Wally (Lois) Nehl, Lawrence Nehl, Ken Nehl, Bill Nehl, Bob Nehl, and Ed Nehl.

  1. So sorry for the loss of your dear Flip. Thoughts and prayers are with the family. She will be sadly missed. Treasure the memories.

  2. We got to know Don and Flip through Dale when he lived in Forest City, they where a super nice friendly couple.
Our deepest sympathy to the Boss family, hold on to the memories.

  3. Sincere sympathy to Flip’s family. I didn’t see her often but when I did she always knew who I was and had a few pleasant words with me. May she rest in peace.

  4. I love that your nick name is Flip… it fits you perfectly. You were small in stature but mighty force. You were fun, funny and didn’t take any “you know what.” I loved your spirit and the more I got to know you the more blessed I was. That blessing will continue because you will always be in heart and mind. Florence and Don Boss had the busiest house in the neighborhood with friends and family always stopping in and always welcome.
It is now sad to look across the street and see the house so silent, a friend gone but not to be forgotten.
Rest in heaven Florence, we know Gods got you and that is a gift to all of us.
Prayers and care to surround family and friends of Florence Boss 🙏🏼

  5. Our sympathy to Mike and your whole family. It was always a joy to visit with your parents.

  6. Flip and I had many great times together. I was her maid of honor at her wedding. She will be missed. Sympathy and prayers to the family.
