Evelyn "Sis" Wurzer died Monday, February 6, 2023 at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 9, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. Interment will follow at the Alpha Cemetery with Matt Scholbrock, Brad Wurzer, Chad Wurzer, Bill Zilmer, Andy Van Sickle, Coleby Bratrud, Anthony Frey and Katie Matt serving as pallbearers. Friends may greet the family from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at the Waucoma Event Center. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass on Thursday at the church. Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in Waucoma have been entrusted with Sis' arrangements. 563-776-6171. Evelyn Catherine Wurzer (Sis), daughter of Jacob and Josephine (Unze) Croatt, was born on February 15, 1923 at St. Lucas, Iowa and attended St. Lucas School. On June 26, 1946 Sis was united in marriage with Edwin Wurzer at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas. The couple raised eight children and farmed in the Alpha area until 1979. After retiring from farming, Sis began her career as a cook and pie baker at the café in Waucoma. At the age of 96 she hung up her apron. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends who can attest they never left her house hungry. She also enjoyed sewing, playing cards and anoccasional stop at the casino. She spent her summers taking care of her flowers and mowing lawn. She would make jams and pies for everyone to enjoy from home grown fruit. Sis was known for working hard and enjoying her life fully. Sis was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America for 68 years, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the St Lucas American Legion Auxiliary. Those left to cherish her memory are her eight children, Carol Zilmer of Broken Arrow, OK; Dean (Diane) Wurzer of Hawkeye, IA; Allan (Joyce) Wurzer of Waucoma, IA; Inez (Steve) Scholbrock of Denver, CO; Faye (Floyd) Winter of Waucoma, IA; Donna (Jeff) Van Sickle of Waucoma, IA; Sheila (Randy) Bratrud of Kensett, IA and Norma (Duane) Frey of Lisbon, IA. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren; a sister, Rose Mary (LaVerne) Franzen; 5 sisters-in-law Irma Hageman, Alma Hemesath, Alvina Hemesath, Doris Smith, Margaret Wurzer and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Sis was preceded in death by her husband Edwin (2004); a son-in-law Donald Zilmer; two grandchildren, Brian Wurzer and Nathan Van Sickle; one great grandchild Jaxon Matt; and three sisters, Mildred (Herbert) Dietzenbach, Louise (Eddie) Dietzenbach and Irene (Albert) Franzen.

  7. My folks and Eddie and Sis were great friends. They enjoyed many dances, games of cards and going out to dinner. One St Patrick’s Day, they played cards on into the evening at our house while it snowed like crazy. When it was time for them to leave we weren’t sure they could…the roads were terrible and no plows would be coming along that night. Somehow they got out of the driveway and made their way home. They had a lot of good times, and I’m sure they are all playing cards, laughing and maybe having a drink or two together again.
