Elvin Glen Hanson was born January 2, 1924, on the family farm in rural Chickasaw County, the son of Glen and Olive (Wesp) Hanson. He attended grade school at the Republic country school until eighth grade. Elvin graduated from Nashua High School in 1941. After graduating, Elvin returned home to work on the family farm. Elvin followed the footsteps of his father and started playing the trumpet when he was a little boy. His love for the trumpet continued to grow as he got older. He played in many different bands over the years including, “Mac & the Buckaroo Buddys”, “Happy Jake”, the “B Sharp Combo”, along with many others.
Elvin meet his future wife Marlene Beach, while playing at a wedding dance. They were married on March 21, 1954, at the Little Brown Church. Their first home was near Republic and this is where they welcomed and raised their three children. Later they moved to Elvin’s family farm in the Republic area.
Elvin had a passion for woodworking and building things with his hands. He was very skilled with a shotgun, and won many trap shooting events at the local gun club. As a young man he enjoyed trapping animals, and liked to travel to the Mississippi fishing, as often as he could. Elvin loved working on his farm and tending to the land and his animals. Farming was a very important part of his life. He also worked for Hydrotile for 24 years.
He was an active member at the Little Brown Church, an Eastern Star Member, and was a Master in the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Marlene; one son, Robert Hanson of La Crescent, MN; two daughters, Mary (Wayne) Hollenbaugh of Ft. Lee, VA and Ann (special friend John) Freiberg of Charles City, IA; 5 grandchildren, Chris (Briannna) Freiberg, Maddie Freiberg, Amy (Kenny) Gillespie, Mark (Michelle) Hollenbaugh and Aaron Hollenbaugh; 2 great grandchildren, Noah and Elijah Gillespie, with a baby great granddaughter on the way.
Preceding Elvin in death were his parents, Olive and Glen Hanson.
Elvin was one of the best employees we ever had. He was a great part of Hydrotile’s early success. The B Sharp Combo played at two of my daughter’s weddings. He was fun to be around and it was a real pleasure to have known him. I had very deep respect for him and am sorry to learn of his passing. Nav Fosse
