Ella Greene

Ella Greene peacefully passed away March 27, 2014, to join Harry and the Lord in Heaven. She was residing at the 11th Street Chautauqua Care Center Charles City, Iowa.
A private burial will be held in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.
A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday Aug. 2, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Nashua.
Ella, the daughter of William and Elli Lalk, was born November 19, 1919, in Flacksmeer, Germany. She came to the United States on September 17, 1923 through Ellis Island. The family settled in Columbus NE. She attended school in Shell Creek, NE, and the family moved to Iowa in 1939.
Ella married Harry L. Greene in Springfield, MO, on May 24, 1941. After living in Cedar Falls, IA, and the Sumner, IA, area for ten years, Ella and Harry moved to Nashua, IA, and spent the rest of her life there. She worked at the Broom Factory in Cedar Falls and she worked at Ben Franklin, and Miller’s Grocery in Nashua for several years. Her greatest experience was serving as a foster grandparent for 17 years. She was so proud of the students she served and families she met.
Ella was a kind, sweet, prudent, loving lady and one who was ready and willing to help. She was active at St. John’s Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher. Ella enjoyed gardening (flowers were her specialty), baking (known for pie and custard making), and traveling to visit her sons and their families.
Survivors include, Son, Lawrence (Sonja) of Scottsdale AZ, Son, Donald (Myrna) Sun Lakes AZ, three grandchildren, Brian ( Pam) Greene of Carmel Indiana, Bradley (Shari) Greene of Scottsdale AZ, Michelle (Joe) Gribben of Eden Prairie MN ; seven great grandchildren, Heather (Tony) Christofaro, Jordan (Kelly) Greene, Katelynn, Kelsea and Jarrod Greene, Amanda and Matt Gribben; two great-great grand children, Jackson and Carter Greene.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harry.

Dear Lawrence, Donald and Greene family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have a lot of fond memories of my Aunt Ella, what a sweet lady she was. I always looked forward going to her house when she would invite the brothers and their familes over. I enjoyed playing pool and watching the Vikings play football with Uncle Harry. Those were very special times that I will always cherish. Most of all I will cherish the loves, hugs and kisses your mother would share. I was blessed to have had your mother as my Aunt! I remember Ella growing up. My favorite story was when I was home visiting while I was in the military. My parents lived across the street and I went out one cold winter day and shoveled the walk for my Mom and Dad. I came in and Dad said ‘would be nice if you went across the street and shoveled Ella’s driveway and sidewalk too’. Coming from my Dad that was more of an order than a request, but I was very happy to do it. An hour later Ella came to our door and said ‘I would like to thank the young man who came over and shoveled my driveway and walk’ I said ‘You are very welcome!’ and then she said ‘Oh and be sure to thank your father for putting you up to it!’ That still makes me smile. She was always great to us kids and was a wonderful neighbor to my parents. My condolences to the family.

Back in the 60s after Dick came back to Nashua from Iowa State & began working for Hydrotile, his folks moved to Forest City & he needed a place to stay. He rented a room from Harry & Ella. He still talks about the delicious apple pies she made. Of course, she INSISTED he always eat with them! They were the kindest people ever. I also had the privilege of being involved in the care of both of them at 11th St. Chautauqua before my retirement in 2008. Our live are enriched because of these kind, caring people. Please know how grateful we are having both your parents touch our lives. We are keeping their family members in our thoughts & prayers during this most difficult time. Myrna, Don and Family, I am sorry to hear about Ella. She was part of my family, growing up in the grocery store. I have told many friends and my family about her and how I have always regretted not having her teach me more German. She was always very kind to me even though I probably drove her crazy sometimes at the store. Ella was always happy! She was irreplaceable in the grocery store. I have many memories when I think of Ella and Harry. Since a little girl and growing up Harry was the guy to go to for all the family vehicles and Ella was at the grocery store. Myrna, Don and Family: I was so sorry to read about your loss. She was such a special person to my Grandmother, Marvel Tefft. When she worked at Miller’s, the highlight for my Grandmother each day was being able to stop in and see Ella when she went to the Post Office.
