Elden was born June 21, 1919, in rural Bremer County, the son of William and Vera Eichmann. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1938. On December 18, 1955 he married Mary Leitha at Waverly First Evangelical Church in Waverly. He worked with his father in the plumbing business before starting his photography career. Elden opened the photography studio in 1959 and added custom framing to the business in 1985. In his spare time he enjoyed scroll sawing, especially making clocks.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary; one daughter, Gena (John) Mackamul of Waverly; two sons, Alan Eichmann of Ankeny and Corby Eichmann of Ankeny; one grandchild, Lawrence; one brother, Edwin Eichmann; one brother-in-law, James Potts; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Eichmann and Vera Violet (Hinman) Eichmann; one brother, Everett Eichmann; two sisters, Evelyn Sinnott and Eleanor Potts.
He was an incredibly talented man and I will miss him. He was my uncle and a great one, always a go-getter and always made me laugh. I will always remember his laugh. It will be strange to come back to Iowa and not see him here.
I had the honor of meeting Elden (and his family) in reference to his photography business and was saddened to read of his passing. Elden blessed me with showing me his designs cut from wood – and ‘wonders of wonders’ showed me a tall clock (fashioned like a grand home with staircases & balconies) he’d built using a 1900-era plan he’d ordered. It was the SAME clock my great grandfather had made from the original plans back then! I’d grown up with that clock (mine made of cigar box wood & painted) and absolutely adored Eldens wonderful re-creation done in the most beautiful variety of woods! I knew him as such a kind man and one of great artistry. He will be missed by many. My sincere condolences to the entire Eichmann family for their great loss. You have my sympathy. I remember coming to have family pictures taken on graduation day. He was very talented.
