Eileen Mary Sumner was born January 27, 1922, in New Hampton, Iowa the daughter of Martin and Evelyn (Honeyman) DeBettignies. She attended a one-room country school house near Fredericksburg, IA until her graduation from the 8th grade. Eileen was united in marriage to Merrill Mark Sumner on August 12, 1944, at the St. Joseph’s Rectory in New Hampton. To this union two sons were born, Dan and Darryl.
The couple farmed East of New Hampton until they retired. They continued living on the farm together until Eileen moved to the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in 2008. Eileen worked for many different families in the area. She and her mother, Evelyn, cooked for the American Legion for many years.
Eileen enjoyed baking bread and holiday coffee cakes and was a perfectionist when it came to her garden. She and Merrill were members of the Chickasaw Square Dance club for 33 years. When it came to raising her chickens and eggs, she took great pride in them and enjoyed her many loyal customers. Her full time job, and her pride and joy, was being a grandmother to her four beautiful granddaughters. She spent hours upon hours teaching them the tips of baking and how to properly clean a chicken. When the girls were little they would walk across the field over to grandma's house to spend time with her. She always enjoyed their time spent together.
Left to cherish her memory are one son, Dan (Diane) Sumner of New Hampton; four granddaughters, Amy (Eric) Conlon of Cedar Rapids, IA, Stacie (Eric) Schockemoehl of Cascade, IA, Missy (Travis) Birkey of Emmetsburg, IA, Sarah (Ryan) Olson of Cedar Rapids, IA; seven great-grandchildren, Braylen Conlon, Kellen Conlon, Ashlyn Schockemoehl, Brynn Schockenmoehl, Bree Schockemoehl, Trey Birkey, Finley Birkey, with the 8th grandchild due in September; one sister, Delores Immermann of New Hampton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merrill on July 28, 2004; son, Darryl on September 10, 2004; brother-in-law, Kored Immermann.
Dan, Diane, and family, You have our deepest sympathy. I loved the twinkle in her eye and, of course, her smile. Playing cards against Merrill and her was so much fun. When she had the setting card on the last trick, she’d just quietly set it down, coyly smile, and talk a bit of ‘trash’ to make sure you knew what had happened. Your’re in our thoughts and prayers.
To Dan, Diane and family, Your Mom was a sweet lady and dear friend. We played cards for many years together. We go way back to the Legion and her delicious cooking and with your Dad. Saying prayers for everyone. Jack and Betty Gorman
Dear Dan, Diane and Family: I am sure Eileen is the angel in heaven that we all knew she was here on earth. There were numerous times in my life with my children that I could not have made it without Eileen’s help. She loved children very much and they in turn loved her. Eileen always had a ready smile and a chuckle laughter that delighted everyone. Eileen and Merill were unique neighbors, always willing to help at whatever a neighbors need might have been. Merill always said, ‘If you need me or invite me, I’ll be there,’ and they were. I have great memories of your mom and dad. Happy that they are together again. Sharon Trewin

I can imagine how it must have brightened Eileen’s days when the girls would arrive from their trek through the field to her house! Eileen was one lucky lady to have family so close looking after her and the Sumner family is lucky to have such a good role model to follow. After a good, long life she can now Rest in Peace. Regards to your family. Eileen was one of the first people I met in New Hampton when I boarded at her mother Evelyn Debettignes’ home. Eileen was always upbeat and kind to me.
