Edward Diekmann

Edward D. Diekmann age 84, of Elma, died on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. Edward Daniel Diekmann was born on March 6, 1924 to Louis and Laura (Haaf) Diekmann in Elma, IA. He graduated from Elma Public High School in 1941 and then attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Ed entered the US Army Air Corp, serving his country in the Aleutian Islands during WWII. He received his honorable discharge on December 7, 1945. He was then employed by the Howard County Equity as a bookkeeper for over 35 years. Ed was a founding board member and treasurer of Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma. He was very supportive of the Elma community and always selflessly helped out in any way he could. He was a member of Elma American Legion John Frahm Post #597, Alta Vista VFW Paul Johann Post #4069, Elma United Methodist Church, and the Elma Municipal Band for which he played the trombone. Ed enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, traveling, music, and his vegetable garden. He was also an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan. He is survived by one niece Susan (Steve) Heitbrink and one nephew Charles L. Garmen both of Charles City. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Laura, one sister Lois Garmen and one niece Vicky Brandt - Garmen. Cemetery: Burial will be in the Howard Cemetery at Elma with military rites provided by the Elma American Legion John Frahm Post # 597 and the Alta Vista VFW Paul Johann Post #4069. Casket Bearers will include Greg Gansen, Bill Zweibohmer, Joe Klobassa, Ed Conway, Jim ODonnell, and Steve Heitbrink. Visitation: Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at the Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma and one hour prior to the service. Service: Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Conway-Kolbet Funeral Chapel in Elma with Rev. Pam Kranzler officiating.
