Edna Florence Reicks was born November 13, 1933, on the Blong family farm near Lawler, IA, the daughter of Louis and Elizabeth (Balk) Blong. She received her education at the Mt. Carmel Catholic School in Lawler and was the Valedictorian of the Lawler High School Class of 1952. After high school, she worked as a telephone operator in Mason City. After some time in Mason City, Edna moved back to Lawler where she worked at the former State Bank of Lawler. While at a dance, she met Ardwin Reicks and the couple was married on June 6, 1955 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. To this union five sons were born; Dale, Dan, Dean, Darwin and Dana. The couple farmed and raised their family north of Lawler.
Edna will be remembered by her family and friends as a woman who never took the word ‘no’ for an answer. She was generous and giving to her family, to her friends and to the many communities she was an integral part of. Edna put her heart and soul into raising all the funds to build the Chickasaw Center in New Hampton. She was an accomplished pianist and organist from her youth, having played at her church and for countless weddings and funerals. She was an excellent seamstress, making a large amount of her families clothing, when they were young. She loved acting in the Country Road Players, the Chickasaw County Players, the New Hampton Community Players and as an ’extra’ in two movies. In addition to traveling extensively, Edna and Ardwin hosted many exchange students, and still regularly visit and keep in contact with Roberto Chihan, Niels Ejskjaar, John Abraham, Jaime Tapius, and William Mancipe.
Her many memberships included the Women of Today, the Catholic Daughters of the America’s, the New Hampton Rotary Club, and she was a Master Gardener.
Edna is survived by her husband, Ardwin; four sons, Dale (Laura) Reicks, Dan (Nona) Reicks, all of New Hampton; Dean (Sandy) Reicks of Lawler and Darwin (Shelley) Reicks of St. Peter, MN; fourteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Cyril Blong of Milwaukee and Cletus Blong of Elma; one sister, Mary Gebel of New Hampton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dana Reicks; granddaughter, Melissa Reicks; two sisters, Patricia Ondrashek and Arlene Blong; one brother, Louis Blong, Jr.

To Edna’s family, you have our deepest sympathy…..I always admired Edna’s energy and can-do spirit…no grass ever grew under her feet!
