Dr. Richard Shields

Dr. Richard L. Shields, age 75 of Waverly, formerly of Nashua died Monday, April 25, 2011, at the Waverly Health Center. Friends may greet the family 5:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011, at the Tendril’s Rooftop Garden on the fourth floor of the Waverly Health Center. There will be a 7:00 p.m. service officiated by Pastor Okitakoyi Lundula of the United Methodist Church, Nashua and the Tyrrell Masonic Lodge #116 of Waverly. There will be a 10:30 a.m. graveside service Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua. Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home, Nashua is in charge of arrangements. Richard L. Shields was born November 16, 1935, in Belle Plaine, IA the son of Walter G. and Maxine (Allen) Shields. In June of 1955, he graduated from Waterloo West High School. He enrolled in the United States Army, and was honorably discharged in 1957. He then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On September 26, 1959 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Waterloo, he was united in marriage to Karen Ohler. To this union, four children were born. The couple moved to Davenport where Richard attended Palmer College of Chiropractic. He graduated in 1961 and the family moved to Nashua where they resided until 2003. He owned and operated his own chiropractic clinic in Nashua until he retired in 1999. Richard was active with the Boy Scouts, a past master of the Bradford Masonic Lodge, President of the Nashua School Board. He served as mayor of Nashua and also as a city council member. He was very active in the economic development of Nashua and served as the Vice Chairman of the North Iowa Transportation Committee which supervised construction on the Avenue of the Saints. Karen and Richard did extensive traveling in their motor home with the family, and also abroad. Richard is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen; two sons, Derik (Kim) Shields of Griswold, IA, Patrick (Diane) Shields of Waverly; a daughter, Kathy (Dean) Shields-Ruth of Waverly; a daughter-in-law, Kim Bigelow of Nashua; four grandchildren, Chris Shields, Mitch (Hillary) Shields, Amber (Michael) Richardson, Elizabeth Ruth; three great grandchildren, Gunnar, Finn, and Corie Richardson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Cory in 1981; and one brother, Don Shields.
