Donald Ray Scharnhorst, age 72 of Nashua, Iowa passed away Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, December 6, 2010 at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with Pastor Thomas Hagen officiating. Special music will be 'Hallelujah', 'The Dance' and 'I Will Remember You'. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Memorials may be directed to the family. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua with military honors by the Nashua V.F.W. Post #6792. Casket bearers will be Cody Weiner, Steven Groe, Jason Slattum, Byran Meinders, Ryan Ebert. Donald Ray Scharnhorst was born on October 17, 1938, to Erwin and Carrie (Nieman) Scharnhorst in Butler County. Donald spent the first five years of his life on a farm southwest of Shell Rock, Iowa. His family then moved to the Scharnhorst family farm east of Horton, Iowa. Donald attended country school and worked on the family farm until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1959 and served his country in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1965. Don met and married Nancy Nordman LaCour on June 2, 1963. He worked for Chamberlain Corporation until being laid off, followed by working for Kehe Construction until 1967 when he worked for his father-in-law. He purchased the service station “Don’s Mobil” in 1968 and operated it until retiring on October 10, 2003. Don and Nancy made their home in Nashua in 1969. Don enjoyed spending time with family and friends, long walks, camping and working outdoors. He was a member of the Nashua Jaycees, Nashua V.F.W. Post # 6792, Nora Springs American Legion #449 and served a term on the Nashua City Council. He also served on the Landfill Commission, and organized the Cedar Lake Neighborhood Association. Don is survived by his wife, Nancy; four children, Rebecca (Louis) Furinger of Dutton, Montana, Lorinda (David) Groe of Lake Mills, Robin (Dean) Meinders of Clarion and Jolene (Daniel) Fehr of Osage; 9 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin (Eleanor) Scharnhorst of Waverly; five sisters, Ellen (Earl) Minard of Kirbyville, MO, Delores Lindner of Oelwein, Karen (Howard) White of Shell Rock, Kathleen (John) Ebert of Charles City and Carolyn (Thomas) Fee of Nashua. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Norman; one sister, Betty Hartzell.

  1. My dear friend….Oh how I remember that cold day years ago. Nancy was baking sugar cookies and you had just sat down at the table to enjoy some of them. I am so glad you had so many good years after that horrific day. I am sorry Nancy that I was not at the funeral. I wasn’t aware that Don had passed until last night. I am so very very sad.   2. Jolene and family, Sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. He was always fun to visit with at school functions and Danny enjoyed talking with him, too.
