Donald James Havlik, known to many as Don, was born on December 16, 1963, in Elma, Iowa, the son of Edward and Matilda (Elenz) Havlik. He grew up with a strong work ethic, a steady spirit, and a deep appreciation for family, faith, and the simple joys of everyday life. He was a Christian, and his faith was an important part of the foundation on which he built his life.
Don earned his education by graduating from high school. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserves where he first started his career as an electrician, proudly serving his country. His time in the military reflected the sense of duty and responsibility that would remain with him throughout his life. After being honorably discharged, he returned to civilian life ready to work hard and build a future for himself and his family.
Don was married to Ann, and to this union, Stephen was born. Although the couple later divorced, Don remained devoted to his family and took great pride in being a father. He valued the relationships in his life and cherished the moments he was able to share with those he loved. His family and friends were always close to his heart, and he especially adored his granddaughter, Kylen. He spent as much time with her as possible and treasured every opportunity to be part of her life.
Don began his career with Hormel Foods in Austin after being honorably discharged from the Army Reserves. While working there, he pursued schooling to become a certified electrician, demonstrating the determination and perseverance that defined his life. He worked for Hormel Foods for 14 years and built a reputation as a dependable and committed employee. In 1999, Don began working for John Deere in Waterloo as an electrician. He was a hardworking and dedicated employee and remained with the company for 25 years before his health forced him to retire. His years of service reflected his strong sense of responsibility and his pride in doing a job well.
In his youth, Don enjoyed hunting and fishing and developed a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. He was also an avid golfer who loved the game of golf. He was very proud to live on the golf course in Elma, a place that suited his love for the game and the peaceful surroundings he enjoyed. He was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and followed them with enthusiasm. As his health declined, Don found comfort in more relaxing hobbies. He enjoyed watching golf, playing a golf game on the computer, and watching documentaries. These pastimes brought him enjoyment and helped fill his days with familiar interests he loved.
Those who knew Don will remember him as a man of quiet strength, loyalty, and devotion. He was steady in his ways, proud of his work, and deeply committed to the people who mattered most to him. He found joy in the life he built, in the family he loved, and in the traditions and interests that gave him happiness over the years.
Don is survived by his son, Stephen Havlik of Elma, IA; and one granddaughter, Kylen Zabel of Elma, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Bonnie Havlik.
