Donald J. Markle age 75 of New Hampton died Wednesday morning, October 26, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. Private funeral services will be held at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton and private burial rites will be held at the New Hampton City Cemetery. Don’s grandchildren, Mandy Turner, Nicki Turner, Hunter Carey, Jacob Benda, Samantha Benda, Chad Young, Jessica Austin and Cory Austin will carry him to his final place of rest. Friends may greet the family 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Donald James Markle was born February 18, 1936, in New Hampton, IA, the son of Fred Herman and Bessie L. (Olson) Markle. He received his education in New Hampton graduating from the New Hampton High School in 1954. Having been involved as a youth in Boy Scouts, Don was one of the first Eagle Scouts in New Hampton. On August 17, 1963, at the New Hampton Baptist Church, he married Charlotte L. Cagley. To this union three children were born; first a son and then two daughters. Don lived in New Hampton his entire life and had worked for Barnett & Markle, a plumbing, heating and propane business, Kelleher Plumbing and Heating, the former White Farm Equipment Company in Charles City and was the Director of Public Works in New Hampton for 28 years. Don and Charlotte also owned the Crystal Ball Roller Rink from 1962-1972. Don was always mechanically inclined and could fix anything, from his home electrical and plumbing repairs, to his lawn mower. He enjoyed woodworking, making his ‘whirlygigs’, going to auctions and garage sales. He was a former member of the New Hampton Fire Department and a long-time member of the First Baptist Church, where he served many years as a trustee. Survivors include his wife of 48 years; Charlotte; one son, Rex (LeeAnn) Markle of Blaine, MN; two daughters, Lori (Scott) Carey of New Hampton, and Tammy (Steve) Benda of Ankeny, IA; five grandchildren; Mandy Turner, Nicki Turner, Hunter Carey, Jacob Benda and Samantha Benda; two step-grandchildren, Jessica (Billy) Austin and Chad Young; one step-great-grandson, Cory Austin; one brother-in-law, Marion (Esther) Cagley of Ionia; four sisters-in-law, Shirley (John) Van Andel of Denver, CO, Gwen Schroeder of Texas City, TX, Barbara (Jerry) Meyers of Lawler and Maxine Cagley of Waterloo; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dave Markle; one sister, Annabell Rowe-Henderson.

  10. I was surprised to see the Hugeback announcement of Don’s Obituary. I remember you telling of how he never wanted to use the wheelchair or any aid to assist him as he was failing. Well now he won’t have to because he is soaring among the angels. If I know Don; he is probably directing traffic up there! He was an inspirational man who cared deeply about this commiunity and will be greatly missed. You have our deepest sympathies and prayers!
