Donald E. Shepard, age 80 of Nashua, Iowa died Friday May 28, 2010, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the United Methodist Church, Nashua with Pastor Okitakoyi Lundula officiating.
Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery with Eric Shepard, Jeffery Brymer, John Kruse, Joel Shepard, Russell Brymer, Dave Theis, and Andrew Brymer serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Broderson, Tom Dann, George Cowell, Ronald Sprague, Charles Swinton, Max Ullom, and Wendell Woodworth. Full military honors will be conducted by the Nashua VFW Post #6792.
Friends may call 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday June 2, 2010 at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
Donald Eugene Shepard was born July 30, 1929 in Janesville, Iowa, the son of George and Reta (Padget) Shepard. He attended Nashua High school, graduating in 1947. In February of 1951, he entered the United States Army, serving during the Korean War with the 94th Engineers Batallion. He was honorably discharged on January of 1953.
On May 29, 1951, Don was united in marriage to Nelda Tolle in Forest Park, Georgia. To this union, three children were born. Donald worked most of his life in Nashua, owning and operating a service station for 26 years, working part time at Chenoweth Funeral Home, and volunteering on the ambulance service. He worked at Hydro Electric Plant in Nashua for a short time, and also delivered motor homes for Winnebago in his later years. The couple also lived in Las Vegas, NV, for two years.
Donald was a member of the Civic League, Lions Club, VFW, American Legion, and the Nashua Volunteer Fire Department. His hobbies included traveling and wood working. Don was a people person, and thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nelda; two sons, James (Cathy) Shepard of Henderson, NV, Larry Shepard of New Hampton, IA; one daughter, Debra (Russell) Brymer of Nashua, IA; six grandchildren; one step-grandson; and 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Claud Shepard and Dale Shepard; one sister, Venette Broderson; and one grandson, James Brymer.
Nelda and Family, So sorry to read of Don’s death. I will always remember Don as an energetic, nice guy with a big smile who went out of his way to help anyone who needed a pull out of a ditch as I did once, or at his gas station. Nelda, you have a special place in our hearts as you often played the organ for my Dad, Roger H. Peterson to sing at the many funerals you both did together. Shep best ever uncle to Lloyd. You meant the world to us. I’ll always remember you jokes, winks and smiles. Rest in peace for the lord took the pain away and now you are back in his arms again.

Nelda and family, Don was as you know an old friend to Dale especially. They had many fun times together thru grade school on up. Our prayers are sent your way to you and the kids. We have many wonderful memories which we will keep forever.
Jim, Eric, and Family, Our hearts go out to you. Though seemingly gone, Donald will live on through you and your children. I’m sure that his memories will live on also through his friends. Let the good times see you through this sad time. One thing We can tell you is that; time does heal the sad heart. Use this time to visit with friends and family, Donald brought you all together. Although we moved to Texas in the mid 80’s, I did spend over 50 years on the farm east of Nashua. I remember Don as an upbeat people person who usually had a smile for everyone. Our condolences to family and friends. The Ralph Feuchtwanger Family
