Delores Schwickerath

Delores 'Dolly' Schwickerath, age 94, of New Hampton, IA, died Saturday, October 7, 2017, at New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 12, 2017, at Holy Family Parish, New Hampton with Rev. Brian Dellaert officiating the Mass. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton with Dolly’s grandsons, Todd Schwickerath, Toby Schwickerath, Chad Steinlage, Wade Steinlage, Chad Humpal, Justin Humpal, Nick Humpal, Mike Humpal, and Josh Schwickerath serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dolly’s granddaughters, Sandy Rieck, Jenni Bearman, Kayla Hazelton, Emily Wegner, Lyndsey Manderfield, Trista Spencer, Kimberly Amendola, and Jessica Moore. Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 6:45 p.m. parish scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday. Delores “Dolly” Elizabeth Schwickerath was born July 22, 1923, in rural New Hampton, IA, the daughter of Albert and Catherine (Laures) Schueller. She attended rural county school through the 8th grade. Dolly started working as a homemaker for the Barnett family in New Hampton; cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children for several years. After working for the Barnett family, she went on to work at Pinks Pantry Tavern in New Hampton for a couple of years. Dolly met Virgil Schwickerath at a dance in Lawler and the couple were married June 25, 1946, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. To this union four children were born. The couple farmed near North Washington, and New Hampton for over 25 years. Life on the farm kept Dolly busy with many duties. She tended to her house and garden, took care of her children and anything else necessary on the farm. After retiring, Dolly and Virgil moved to New Hampton. Dolly worked at Sears in New Hampton part-time after moving into town. Dolly enjoyed baking cookies and bread and would give it away to anyone who would stop by and visit her. Dolly also liked playing cards, embroidery, and playing solitaire. She enjoyed fishing trips to Leach Lake, MN. Dolly enjoyed making cheeseburgers and french fries every Sunday after Mass and would be known to feed people who would stop by. Dolly loved spending time with family and friends especially her grandchildren. Dolly is survived by two sons, Tom (Pat) Schwickerath of New Hampton, IA, Jim (Carolyn) Schwickerath of New Hampton, IA; two daughters, Nancy (Reggie) Humpal of New Hampton, IA, Cathy (Ralph) Steinlage of Lawler, IA; seventeen grandchildren, thirty seven great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil in 2002; two brothers, Clarence and Lawrence Schueller; five sisters, Sally Weigel, Marie Leichtman, Henrietta Elenz, Gen Lewis, and Kathleen “Shorty” Hilsman. Dolly loved the color red, and the family would appreciate if you would wear red to the visitation and funeral in her honor.
