Dean A. Johnson, age 58 of Faribault, MN, formerly of Alta Vista, IA, died Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey presiding. Friends may greet the family 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the funeral home prior to the service. Dean Alan Johnson was born August 28, 1957, in New Hampton, IA the son of Melvin and Avis (Bachmann) Johnson. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1975. After high school, he attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he earned a degree in Criminal Justice, and was a member of their Viking football team. Dean started his career in Criminal Justice in Red Wing, Minnesota working at a juvenile correctional facility. He then moved to Faribault, Minnesota where he worked at the Medium Security Prison and retired in 2010 as a Sergeant. He was introduced to Cheryl DeRider and the couple was married December 6, 2012. They spent several special years together. Dean loved the outdoors and all that it had to offer. Whether it was pheasant hunting in the fall, deer hunting in the winter, or fishing in the spring, Dean spent most of his time outdoors. He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Minnesota Twin fan. Dean enjoyed attending the Chuck Wagon Races, and was a fan of playing cards, especially Euchre. He also enjoyed going camping in Northern Minnesota with Cheryl, playing poker and craps and fishing. Dean is survived by his wife, Cheryl Johnson of Faribault, MN; one sister, Susan (Tim) Nosbisch of New Hampton, IA; one brother, Keith (Lori) Johnson of Alta Vista, IA; two brother-in-laws, Steve DeRider and Henry DeRider; two step-sons, Jathan Moline and Aaron Moline; two nephews, Drew (Maggie) Johnson of New Hampton, IA and Randy (Morgan) Nosbisch of Alta Vista, IA; four nieces, Deanne (Joe) Vaughan of Minneapolis, MN, Dana (Erik) Lehmann of Iowa City, IA, Ellen (Bret) Groenenboom of Johnston, IA, and Amy Nosbisch of Oelwein, IA; and one great nephew and four great nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents in 2005; and a great nephew, Jonah Johnson.

  3. I am very sorry to hear of Dean’s passing. I met Dean while attending Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD in the 1970’s. He lived on the same dorm floor as I did during my 4 years at school and was a good friend. He was a free spirit that always had a smile on his face and a laugh that was contagious.
