Darwin "Butch" Slick age 80 of Fredericksburg, IA, died Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Whispering Willows Assisted Living and Memory Wing in Fredericksburg, IA. A private family service will be held at a later date. Darwin "Butch" Duane Slick, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away in Fredericksburg, Iowa, on September 13, 2023. Born on January 29, 1943, in New Hampton, Iowa, to Howard and Beulah (Moody) Slick, Butch was known for his friendly demeanor, creative spirit, and handy skills. Growing up in Fredericksburg, Butch attended Fredericksburg High School. After school, Butch began working at Chamberlains in Waterloo, demonstrating his dedication and hard work. He later transitioned to Shawver Well in Fredericksburg, where he stayed until his well-deserved retirement. In 1960, Butch's life took a beautiful turn when he met and fell in love with Idella Vetter. The two got married in Missouri and settled in Fredericksburg to start their family life. Their story was enriched with the birth of their four children: Dorene Cannon, Diana (Todd) Ohm, Darcy Lehmkuhl, and David (Jackie) Slick. Butch was a family man at heart. The joy of his life was spending time with his 11 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. He was their biggest cheerleader, attending their activities and supporting their endeavors with pride and joy. Butch's love for his family extended to his hobbies as well. A fan of chuckwagon races and horses, he also enjoyed exploring various places, with Colorado being one of his favorites. Butch was a friendly and creative soul, known for his knack for crafting and fixing things. His handy skills were admired by those around him, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand. His warm personality and creative spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Darwin "Butch" Duane Slick is survived by his wife, Idella; his children, Dorene Cannon of Sumner, Iowa, Diana (Todd) Ohm of New Hampton, Iowa, Darcy Lehmkuhl of Bennett, Colorado, and David (Jackie) Slick of Sumner, Iowa. He also leaves behind his brother, Edward Slick of Lawler, Iowa; sister, Glenice (Robert) Leach. He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren, Thad Lehmkuhl and Nicole Cannon, one great-grandchild, Aiden Flanscha, one sister, Geraldine (Duane) Morris, and a son-in-law, Randy Lehmkuhl. Butch's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and creativity. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion to his loved ones, a passion for life, and an indomitable spirit that will forever be remembered by his family and friends. His memory will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
