Dale Duane McFarlane was born January 30, 1950 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Clyde and Thelma (Landsgaard) McFarlane. He attended rural country school and graduated from North Fayette High School in 1968. He met Judy Phillips, his future wife, at Matters Ballroom outside of Decorah in 1969 at a dance. They were introduced to each other through a mutual friend. Dale’s father needed help on the family farm so Dale came back to the area after a short time at Iowa State University. He continued farming until 2012 when he retired. The original farm is where Volga Lake is currently located. Farming was everything to Dale. He enjoyed everything about it. Even at a young age he enjoyed working for Attrus Stepp planting watermelons. Dales family was important to him. He was always there for his siblings. No matter what, he was just a phone call away. In Dale’s free time he enjoyed NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt, slow pitch softball games in Ossian, go-kart racing, playing cards with his friends in West Union and in his later years, gardening. Dale belonged to the Froghollow Motorcycle Crew and was on the board of directors for the Cattlemen and Corngrowers. He also served on the Township Trustee Board for the Westfield Township. He is survived by his wife, Judy Phillips of Waucoma, IA; one daughter, Stacy (Bill) Croatt of Kent, IL; one grandson, Tyler Croatt of Kent, IL; two brothers, Bob (Joyce) McFarlane of Randalia, IA, Paul McFarlane of Cedar Rapids, IA; four sisters, Sandy (Brian) Gossman of Ames, IA, Sharon (Kyle) Comer of Lone Tree, IA, Tracy (Dale) Elsbernd of Calmar, IA, Paula (David) Schott of Clermont, IA; many nieces and nephews.
