Christopher Lee Bruns was born May 15, 1991, in New Hampton, IA, the son of Jeff and Lyn (Meissen) Bruns. He attended Turkey Valley Schools and was a 2010 graduate of Turkey Valley High School. When he was a child, he was always known to be full of energy and have a wonderful imagination.
Chris was a part of the Lawler Fire Department, Chickasaw Rescue Squad, Owatonna Fire Department and Mantorville Fire Department. Being a fireman was very important to Chris. He always said his dream was to live at a firehouse and be a full-time fireman. He achieved that goal at the young age of 25 while living in Owatonna and loved every minute of it. Chris also worked at Dave Syverson Trucking and the Kasson-Mantorville Community School District.
You could often catch Chris pulling a practical joke on one of his family members of friends. He was known to have a wonderful sense of humor and was always making people laugh. He also enjoyed cooking and creating different concoctions in the kitchen.
Racing was also a big part of Chris’ life. He met his long-time girlfriend, Alyssa Thevenot, at a race shop through a mutual friend. It continued to be a thing the couple enjoyed together. Chris raced at the Upper Iowa Speedway, Fayette County Speedway, Deer Creek Speedway and the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, WI, just to name a few. He also pitted for a lot of different drivers throughout the years and always enjoyed being around the track.
Chris is survived by his father, Jeff Bruns of Cresco, IA; mother, Lyn (James) Bailey of Lawler, IA; long-time girlfriend, Alyssa Thevenot of Kasson, MN; paternal grandmother, Jan Bruns of Cresco, IA; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jack and Leona Meissen; paternal grandfather, Joseph Bruns; uncle Jim Melver.
So sorry to hear about Chris! Sending hugs and prayers to your family!
Thinking of the family and all the good times our kids and Chris had together. 🙏🙏 From The Currans
Deepest sympathy to the Brun’s family.
As an employee of Kasson-Mantorville Schools where Chris did custodial work, I know first hand what a nice, hard-working man he was. Chris always said “hi” and had a smile on his face. We will miss him, and my heart and prayers go out to the Bruns family during this difficult time.
I will forever remember Chris as a gangly young teenager rollerblading down main street Lawler with a hockey stick in his hand ready to pick up a game somewhere. And of course, he had a smile on his face. Chris made Lawler proud by moving on from our Lawler Fire Department and serving with the volunteer departments wherever he lived. Although Chris didn’t give his life on a call, I think the firefighter’s prayer is still appropriate because I know Chris gave it his all:
When I am called to duty, God
Wherever flames may rage
Give me strength to save a life
Whatever be its age.
Let me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
and quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
To give the best in me,
To guard my friend and neighbor
And protect their property.
And, if, according to your will,
While on duty I must answer death’s call;
Bless with your protecting hand
My family, one and all.
Our sympathy to Lyn and James and their families.
Linn , our deepest sympathy to you and your family. Emmett and Marianne Meissen

Thoughts and prayers go out to Alyssa and the Bruns family during this difficult time…. He will be missed deeply in every heart and soul that he touched.
Our prayers are with you Alyssa and our sympathy to all of the Bruns family during this difficult time. Chris is a wonderful man and is very special to our son Nolan. He has many fund memories with Chris including the times that he sat in his race car. Hugs to all of you. The Engebretson family.
Lynn, So sorry to hear about your son’s passing. It sounds like he led a full and active life and enjoyed all that he was a part of. No one this young should leave this world with so much to give. We have to realize that God works in mysterious ways and there is a reason for taking Chris at such a young age. I always say that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. You were always Dad’s best helper at NHNRC and just want you to be strong now, when you need to be. Hugs and prayers to you and so glad that you have Jim to lean on. Prayers and hugs to you. Godspeed!
Lynn and Family, you have my deepest sympathy at this difficult time. Prayers to you all.
