Charlie was born in Nashua, in the old town of Bradford on February 25, 1935, to Jesse Marion Jones and Bernice Esther (Plantz) Jones. He graduated from Nashua High School in 1954. Charlie married Marlys Wilde of rural Grafton in 1959. To this union were born three daughters. After Marlys’ death in 1981, he married Rachel Winchester in 1983.
Charlie was a life-long member of The Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua Iowa, and could always be called upon to help serve when things needed to be done at the church. He enjoyed talking history of The Little Brown Church and of Old Bradford, as well as many other historical topics, such as World War II and family genealogy. Charles was proud of his home, which he built himself in 1964 and lived in until his death.
Charlie began working at a young age for farmers. He worked at a gas station and mechanic shop in high school, and while he was at college for a short time. He was hired at Hydro-Tile in Nashua where he worked as an electrician. He and Marlys raised a truck garden and sold sweet corn commercially. He ran a junkyard and sold scrap metals. Charlie started farming and had a herd of dairy cattle for many years. He also drove truck to pick up milk for the Nashua Co-op. He was sexton at Greenwood Cemetery and continued in assisting sales of lots well into his 70’s. He was engaged in many of these occupations at the same time, and was a “jack of all trades”.
He remained active but was slowed by a collision with a semi-truck about ten years ago which broke his hip. He will be well-remembered for his ability to “MacGyver” adapt, reconfigure and re-think ways of doing things to overcome his physical limitations.
Charlie is survived by his daughters: Joaquin of Mason City, Janie and her husband Brian Remsburg of Fort Dodge and Julie and her husband Rory Winters of Mason City, grand-children Brett (Bobbie Jo) Dahl of Rockwell, Tyler Dahl of Sheffield, Jordan Jones-Smeby of Rockwell and Collin Jones-Smeby of Rockwell, and three great-grandchildren: Ellie, Brenson and Alexa; former spouse Rachel and sons Don and wife Pam Winchester and their children Emily, Bethany, Donald and Adeline; Chuck Winchester and Dean Winchester; brothers-in-law Richard (Sandy) Wilde of rural Osage and Allen (Mariedna) Wilde of Osage and nieces Deb (Steve) Sjolsvold, Peggy (Scott) Henning and nephews Jeff (Virginia) Titus and Kevin (Kristy) Wilde; step-grandsons Matt Remsburg, Chad (Cassidy) Remsburg and Stormy Winchester.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Henry and Mary (Mae) (Stephens) Jones; Joseph and Mary (Simpson) Plantz; his parents; in-laws Arnold and Ruth Wilde; wife Marlys; sister Alice Titus, brother-in-law Jack Titus; nephews Brian Wilde and Barry Wilde; uncle Hubert Jones and three Jones cousins: Hazel Nelson, Glenn Jones, and Ethel Forbes.
