Ceola Rosalie Sullivan was born January 11, 1918, in Lime Springs, Iowa, the ninth child of Frederick and Rose (Schroder) Fisher. Growing up on a farm, Ceola enjoyed the woods to pick berries, roamed the apple orchards, swam and fished in the river plus tended the chickens, horses and dairy cows. She also enjoyed helping in the huge vegetable garden. Threshing days were her favorite as she helped her mother cook and bake specialties loving the excitement. She attended rural and town schools in Lime Springs and graduated top of the class in Aredale in 1934, at the age of 16.
Ceola worked in Hampton, IA, for Purell News and Swift & Co. She also lived in Waterloo and worked for Hanson & Co. sewing cartridge belts and luggage for veterans returning from war. Eighteen years at Shawver Well Co. and two years at Beatrice Cheese completed her working careers.
She married Kenneth Sullivan in 1950 in Fredericksburg where Kenneth co-partnered ownership of the John Deere Implement. To this union two daughters were born, Dixie and Angela. They were blessed with four grandchildren and Ceola with two great-grandchildren. The couple were Grand Marshalls of the Dairy Day parade in 1994.
Ceola was a member of Peace Evangelical Church, later transferring membership to Hillcrest Baptist and Brethren Church. Ceola enjoyed children, teaching Sunday School and VBS, and was a Girl Scout and 4-H Leader. She was an active church member in the Ladies and Sewing Circles and vases of her garden flowers often adorned the sanctuary. She was also a member of the Garden Club and Senior Citizens group.
Ceola had many hobbies including writing poetry, oil painting, gardening (vegetable, fruit, flowers), cooking, sewing and quilting. In all these areas, she expressed artistic talents and appreciation of God's beauty. She loved sharing the fruits of her labor with family and friends especially her cooking, baking and hand-stitched quilts. Many Sundays, the family spent fishing/boating on the Mississippi or trout fishing at Decorah or Elkader. Kenneth and Ceola went on several bus trips and took their mini-home to the Ozarks for more fishing and sight-seeing.
Ceola dearly loved God, her family, nature’s beauty, helping and serving others. She leaves a legacy of faith and fond memories to cherish.
Survivors include two daughters, Dixie Wakeman of Fredericksburg and Angela (George) Baker of Arlington Heights, IL; four grandchildren, Matthew Baker of Port Hueneme, CA, Joshua (Joanne) Wakeman of San Diego, CA, Jessica Lapelis of Clarksville, TN and Jason Wakeman of Davenport, IA; two great-grandchildren, Kyle Lapelis and Dagny Wakeman; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth in 2000; three sisters, Leta Hennesly, Helyn Gott and Vera Roesler; six brothers, Herbert, Paul, Emil, Erwin, Carl and Milton Fisher; a son-in-law, Gregg Wakeman.
Dear family you have my deepest sympathy. Ceola had an amazing life from the way the obit read. How amazing to know someone like Ceola especially when I know she was my grandfather’s (Herbet Fisher) sister. I did not know Ceola personally, but remember getting a graduation card from her when I graduated from high school and was told she had gone to a few family picnics. I just stumbled across this tonight cause seen Dixie had posted her mom’s auction on chickasaw fb for sale site, other wise I would have never known. I see Milton in this obit has passed too. So sorry. We lost our mom (Mary Ann Fisher -78) from Ionia to cancer on April 16. Just remember all the good memories and all the stories. I would love to hear some of the stories that I can pass on to my family in regards to the Fisher side. Sincerely, Lori Fisher Kuykendall-Floyd, IA
Aunt Ceola was a wonderful person, I enjoyed her many letters and stories of the Fishers on our visits. She will be missed by all who knew her. Cynthia

I remember every Father’s Day we would go to the Fisher reunion in Lime Springs, Iowa. Our families would get together and have a great time and great food. Aunt Ceola once sent me a couple of her cookie recipes in a Christmas card….Mmmmm good. I cherish those recipes! She is with her family that went before her. We’ll meet again!

Dear Family, So sad to hear the news and as Dixie said she is home now and is smiling. The stories and so many visits we had with Ceola and also with your father will never be forgotten. She was a caring Christian lady who had a drive and worked so hard in life. Aunt Ceola loved her church. We all will miss her dearly but she is in a better place. My Dad will be happy to see her! I pray God pours upon all of you, his sweet amazing grace and overflows your heart with peace as you live in his embrace. God Bless, Steve, Danielle and Cindy ‘Fisher’ Lovell
Dixie, Angie and family, We are so saddened to hear of Ceola’s passing. She was such a wonderful lady and neighbor. We will never forget seeing her out in her garden, all the wonderful goodies she cooked for us, and the boys will never forget her homemade grape juice. We hope you can take comfort in that the suffering is over. May God’s love and strength get you through this difficult time. All our love, Lynne, Klel, Todd & Trevor
Dixie, may God hold you close as you go through the days ahead.
