Carole Edson

Carole L. Edson age 83 of rural Ionia died Monday, May 30, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2011, at the Republic Community Church, rural Ionia, with Rev. Okitakoyi Lundula presiding. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City with Matt Edson, Tim Edson, Scott Edson, Chad Nelson and Daryl Lowe serving as pallbearers. Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011, at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Carole Louise Edson was born in Bremer County, IA, on September 26, 1927, the daughter of Ray and Alma (Hocke) Muench. She was the fourth of six children. She always spoke affectionately of her parents and her life as a child, sharing many wonderful stories. Carole attended Dietz Country School in Bremer County through eighth grade. She went to High School for three years in Cedar Falls, living with her Grandma Hocke. Carole finished high school in New Hampton graduating in 1945. She went to Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls for one summer and then started teaching. She taught for three years at the Brown Country School and for a year at the Greenwood Country School. Carole had a life-long love for teaching. On February 20, 1948, at her parents home, she was united in marriage to Virgil C. Edson. To this union two sons were born. Together they established a family farm operation which continues today. Carole was an excellent seamstress, taking a lot of satisfaction in making shirts, her own clothes, dance costumes, band uniforms, curtains, square-dance dresses and clothes for her grandchildren. Her family and friends enjoyed many excellent meals in her home. She was an avid gardener. Carole served on the Nashua School Board, taught Sunday School at Republic Community Church, was a strong music booster in the Nashua schools, volunteering countless hours for the support of music. Carole and Virgil enjoyed square-dancing with the New Hampton Chick-a-Squares. She directed several excellent variety shows in the community to raise funds for the music program and other school needs. Another of Carol’s gifts was writing poetry and she often communicated her thought in a poem. Grandchildren were always welcomed to “Grammy’s” house. She provided many hours of fun and good times for them creating many precious memories for her grandchildren. A special treat was going shopping with Grammy on their birthdays. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Virgil; two sons, Jeff (Janice) Edson, Cliff (Donna) Edson all of rural Ionia; six grandchildren, Lisa (Chad) Nelson, Matt (Bridget) Edson, Brenda (Daryl) Lowe, Tim Edson (Leah Conrad), Scott Edson and Traci Edson; two great-grandchildren, Makenna and Autumn Nelson; three sisters, Doris (Stan) Feutchwanger of Frederika, Donna Kernik of Roseville, MN, Shirley (Howard) Beam of Anoka, MN; one brother, Delbert “Buddy” Muench of Charles City; brother-in-law, Vearl (Mary) Edson of rural Ionia; sister-in-law, Marge Edson Hoffman of New Hampton. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert (Mary Ann) Muench; two brothers-in-law, Verne Edson and Frank Kernik.
