Carole Deann Johnson was born April 18, 1935, in Alpha, IA, the daughter of Phil J. and Mary “Mae” (Nienhaus) Lusson. She received her education in Ridgeway and graduated from the Ridgeway High School in 1953. She continued her education in Minneapolis where she trained as a laboratory technician. While attending a dance at the Inwood Ballroom in Spillville, IA, Carole met Alvin “Avey” Johnson. The couple were married on September 21, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cresco, IA. To this union two daughters were born.
Carole had worked at the Cresco and New Hampton Clinics, Ace Hardware in New Hampton and was employed for 26 years with the ASCS offices in New Hampton, Cresco and Charles City. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Holy Family Rosary Society, the Lawler American Legion Auxiliary and the Fredericksburg Country Club. Carole was an active volunteer for many organizations including Iowa Hospice, Silver Advantage and Mercy Medical Center. She enjoyed golfing and had a hole-in-one on #2 at the Fredericksburg Country Club. She also liked reading, crocheting and of course attending any and all sporting events.
Carole loved her family and adored her grandchildren. She had a caring heart. The word ‘no’ was not in her vocabulary. A job or task was never too big to try and tackle.
Survivors include her husband, Avey; two daughters, Danita (Tom) Winter of St. Charles, IL and Leann (Bob) Vorwald of New Hampton; four grandchildren, Cara (Jeff Kirsch) Winter of Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Abby Winter of Omaha, NE, Megan (Alex) Koenigs of Cresco and Marc Vorwald of New Hampton; one great-grandchild expected in September.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Daryl Lusson and a grandson Mark Winter in 1986.

LeAnn, I am in shock and great disbelief…I am so so sorry for yours and your families loss…it has been such a great pleasure of mine getting to know Carol over the last three years. And my heart aches hearing the news today. They always say that a real hairstylist touches more lives than hair…and she really has touched mine. She was such an amazing lady with such a big heart and my memories of her will forever be cherished. Prayers from my family to yours during this tough time. Love, Amber Lane

Avey and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Carole was a thread throughout our lives, working with my mother at ASCS, working with her cross county when i started with the agency, and being a great friend to my parents before, during and after retirement. I still see her lovely handwriting on old paperwork here in the office. We will miss seeing her serving at the Jerico church happenings! Her dedication to the job at hand showed in everything she was involved in. She was a bright, fun, dedicated, smart, attractive soul and may her memories bring you comfort.
Dear Uncle Avey, Danita, and LeAnn: I am so very sorry that Aunt Carole has passed away. It was so sudden, and while she did not linger and suffer, she leaves behind her loved ones who grieve for their loss of their wonderful wife and mother. Aunt Carole was always cheerful, smiling, and upbeat. She loved to help others and had a servant’s heart. My Mom does not do email, so I will write here that Mom loved Carole very much and always spoke so highly of her. My Mom is also so grateful that God gave her the gift of having a wonderful telephone conversation with Carole the day before she died. I am sorry that I can’t attend the funeral, but I am very glad that Mom will be able to attend. God’s special grace be with you at this time– Love, Terri McCalla
Deepest sympathy! Thoughts and prayers are with you all!
Shirley and I will keep Carole in our prayers. We offer our condolences to the family, especially to Avey, Danita, Cara and Abby. Dick and Shirley Winter

Heaven has gained an angel; thank you for sharing her with our community! With our sincere sympathy and loving prayers for your family, Francie & Steve Crawford
I am so sorry to hear of Carole’s passing. She was just one of the kindest persons I know. I worked with Carole at ROSS Marketing where she was an absolute professional at her job. She received the award of ‘Employee of the Month’ several times. Quite the role model for new employees to look up to, but at the same time very humble. We had our laughs and good times too. She will be missed by many. To Carole’s family, God bless you and may you find comfort and peace in knowing that she is with our heavenly father. Her love will always be with you. Jennifer Erickson
Dear Leann and Family, Your mom was the best and put up with so much from us. She always smiled and knew that we would grow up. I am so sad for you and your family. Even after all of these years she lived on in my memory. What an honor to have known her. Barb Heusmann Berry
