Born on November 27, 1949, in Denver, Colorado, to Billy and Betty Lou (Carlson) Knapp, Billy was a beacon of joy and kindness throughout his 74 years.

After graduating from Hinkley High School in Aurora, Colorado, Billy proudly served his country in the Army. His adventurous spirit eventually led him to Iowa in the 1980s, where he became a long-term resident of Linn Haven Rehab & Healthcare. In the nursing home, Billy was affectionately recognized as a big “flirt,” always ready with a wave or a wink for fellow residents and nurses alike. His ever-present smile and warm heart made him a beloved figure within the community.

Billy’s interests were as genuine as his character. He had a passion for cars and could often be found tinkering with them, his hands skillfully bringing life back to engines and his eyes lighting up with each rev. He was a man who preferred the scenic route, both on the road and in life. Billy truly embodied the philosophy of taking one’s time, a practice he applied to his final days with grace and intention.

Those who knew Billy will remember him as a very kind soul. His presence was a comforting constant, and his approach to life was a reminder of the gentler pace that often reveals the most profound beauty. Billy’s love for the open road was matched only by his love for people. He approached each interaction with an open heart and an open mind, making friends wherever he went.

Billy’s journey through life was marked by the connections he made and the smiles he shared. His legacy is one of love, kindness, and friendship. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, but his spirit will continue to inspire those he touched to live with joy and to cherish every moment.

Billy is survived by his mother Betty Lou Knapp of Fredonia, WI; son BJ Knapp of Jesup, IA; sisters Karla TeStroete of Cedar Grove, WI and Linda (Lee) Bunting of Huntington, IN; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Billy Knapp; and brother-in-law Jerry.

The family would like to thank the nurses at Linn Haven Rehab & Healthcare and the staff with St. Croix Hospice.
