Arlene Marie Holthaus was born April 5, 1934, in Lawler, IA, the daughter of Hugo and Hildegard (Bucheit) Rosenbaum. She received her education in Lawler and graduated from the Mt. Carmel High School in 1952. While at a local dance she met her future husband and on September 14, 1954, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, she married James Herman Holthaus. To this union nine children were born. Arlene was a farmwife and housewife raising her children and working side-by-side with her husband on the farm. Arlene was always the first one to the dairy barn around 5:00 a.m. to feed the cows and get everything ready for the milking. She enjoyed her miniature cow collection, embroidering, flowers, gardening, playing cards and bingo. She will certainly be remembered for the pies she made and the hours she worked for the many funeral luncheons. Arlene especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Richard (Cindy) Holthaus of Alta Vista and Randy (Melissa) Holthaus of Plainfield; six daughters, Glenda Holthaus of New Hampton, Gladys (Gary) Martin of Waucoma, Barbara Holthaus of Marshalltown, Susan (LeRoy) Gossling of New Hampton, Nancy (Bruce) Dunahoo of Zearing and Amy (Dale) House of Sioux Falls, SD; twenty-six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Luella Junko of Lawler, Phyllis (Tom) Mitchell of Hawkeye and Grace (Don) Arens of Lawler; a special aunt, Sister Marie Bohr O.S.F. of Dubuque; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim on January 16, 2015; her son, Roger Holthaus, on September 23, 2014; her parents; a brother, Eugene Rosenbaum; her mother and father-in-law, Herman and Pauline Holthaus; sisters-in-law, Clarice Glaser and Donna Mae Holthaus.

To all of Arlene & James’ children. So very sorry to hear of Arlene’s passing. I feel so fortunate that she & James entered my life. They are the only people I ever met that knew my Grandma Bengfort who was James’ Aunt. She had passed when I was 2 yrs. old so was so awesome to hear their stories. I feel very privileged to have created that bond that led to many great memories with your parents. Please know that they loved every single one of you so very much & had such a proud look on their faces when they talked of each of you. God Bless You All. Mary Kay Stee

I did not know Arlene, but she had to be a great lady. She certainly raised a responsible, dedicated son in Rick. I know him through county supervisors meetings, and I am always impressed with his quiet, sincere leadership. I do not know other family members, but I trust that her influence rubbed off on each of you, too. God Bless her memory. Vicki Rowland Fayette County Supervisor
