Together they had three children, Kathryn, Kenneth and Carl. For the next 87 years, Ardith enriched the Nashua area with her spirit and her smile as she raised three children, gave freely of her time and energy to the community and was a loving and supportive wife to her husband. Despite early tragedy, in losing Carl at age 17, Ardith never lost her desire to give to others and through the years she held many jobs at her church, served on the ambulance crew for nine years and worked diligently with her husband Paul at the Food Pantry for over 20 years. Ardith's true gift was as a caregiver, and throughout her life she demonstrated her love and compassion for others as she cared for her aging mother, then her mother-in-law and finally her husband Paul, as his bad health took its toll. Ardith had a special affinity for children, providing child care to many local children as well as her grandchildren and almost all tell wonderful stories of her 'cowboy soup' (an exotic concoction that on close exam turned out to be Campbells Bean Soup), of overnight stays that resulted in waking the next morning to the sound of 'THE INDIANS ARE COMING!' and the dire threat of 'there is going to be war in this camp' when the children became too rowdy. In later years Ardith returned to school, receiving her High School GED and discovered a real love of oil painting, a pastime that brought her great pleasure. Many of her works now hang in the homes of her grandchildren, a visual reminder of the warm spirit and love she gave to them. Ardith is survived by daughter, Kathryn (Robert) Baird, Evansdale IA; daughter-in-law, Ruth Goings, Elkader IA; sister, Janet (Dwight) Barnhart, Greene IA; sister, Gertrude Nelson, Phoenix AZ; Grandchildren, Scott (Amy) Goings, Mark (Barb) Goings, Peggy Goings, Mary (Tim) Otto, Susan (Scott) Koppmann, Robert (Kelly) Baird, Sara Baird. Great grandchildren, James, Jackson, Sam, Charlotte, Ben, Jacob, Riley, Matthew and Abby. Ardith was preceeded in death by her husband, Paul and sons, Carl and Kenneth.

Guestbook

  1. I would like to extend my sympathy to your entire family on the loss of your mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. Growing up in Nashua, I remember your mom and love she had for you all and how she ‘stood up’ for your brother, Carl during his health issues. Carl and I were in the same grade in school. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  2. Our condolences to the family. Will always remember the fun we had playing in the back yard, when visiting Aunt Ardith and Uncle Paul.

  3. We are very sorry for the passing of Ardith. I have many fond memories of her of the summers and Thanksgiving.

  4. I want to express my deepest sympathy to all of Ardith’s family. I will always remember Ardith as the compassionate caregiver throughout her life. She had a special love for children —my kids loved going to her home for all the pizza and pop parties. She will truly be missed by the community of friends even in her later years as director of so many activities and ? athletic director ! Ha! Sorry I couldn’t come with David and Karen because of my health problems but I will be with all of you in this celebration of this special ladies life. I will give a gift to my own church in her name. Love Mary Ellen and family

  5. We wish to extend our condolences to the family. Our best wishes to you all. In case you are wondering, Claude is Paul’s 2nd cousin; the grandson of James and Martha Christensen, son of Hans and Clara. . Unfortunately the families did not get together much during their growing up

  6. I was saddened to hear that Ardith Goings had passed away. She was an important person during my high school years. She helped me in many ways. Unfortunately due to the weather, I will not be able to make it–but my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Natalie

  7. Dear Ruth Ann Goings and All, I was so sorry to read on the Internet this morning about the death of your mother-in-law. She was a very nice woman. Also, they, as a couple, were a wonderful example of what a good citizen of Nashua and the world should be like. You are your family will be in my prayers. See you this August in Nashua! With Love, Peggy Drake Burkina Faso, West Africa.
