Alvin P. Winter age 75 of rural Waucoma died Sunday evening, October 9, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2011, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler with Rev. Nick March celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed on the casket by his wife and four children. Offertory gifts will be presented by Katie Sharp, Halle Von Ah and Nicole Von Ah. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery with Spencer Sharp, Ashley Sharp, Megan Sharp, Lance Voh Ah Jr., Jennifer Winter, Kristen Winter and Nicholas Winter serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dean Fisher, Dean Ohrt, Charlie Orvis, Gerald Lensing, Larry Jirak, Gene Lynch, Jack Lynch, Gene Winter, Don Benz, Duane Kuehner, Tom Carolan, Ronnie Kuennen and Don Jirak. Friends may greet the family 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 5:00 p.m. rosary and a 7:00 p.m. parish scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at church on Saturday. Alvin Peter Winter was born February 24, 1936, on the Winter family farm south of St. Lucas, IA, in rural Fayette County, the second son of Joseph and Teresa (Kuehner) Winter. He attended grade school at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Lawler and was a 1954 graduate of the Lawler High School. As a young man, Alvin worked the family farm with his father and also worked as a carpenter. On June 6, 1959, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church-Reilly Ridge, in rural Lawler, he married Joanne Winter. To this union four children were born. He and Joanne farmed the Winter farm southeast of Lawler where they raised their family. From 1972 – 1980, Alvie also worked at the former Oliver Tractor Co. in Charles City. Alvie’s work and hobby were always one and the same thing. He enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams, the St. Louis Cardinals and was a Nascar fan. Alvie enjoyed going to coffee and playing cards. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church where he had previously served on the council. Survivors include his wife of over 52 years, Joanne; one son, Mike (Denice) Winter of New Hampton; three daughters, Jacqueline (Joe) Sharp of Centerville, IA, Donna (Charles) Bagge of Cedar Rapids and Diane (Lance) Von Ah of Carmel, IN; ten grandchildren, Spencer Sharp, Ashley Sharp, Megan Sharp, Lance Voh Ah Jr., Jennifer Winter, Kristen Winter, Nicholas Winter, Kathie Sharp, Halle Von Ah and Nicole Von Ah; one brother, Art (Betty) Winter of Kansas City, MO; brother-in-law, Don Winter of Lawler; sister-in-law, Jeanette Kurtenbach of Wyoming, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.

  2. Joanne, Mike, Jackie, Donna, Diane and families, I just learned of Alvies death this afternoon. I would have liked to get up for visitation but was too late. It was always a fun day when Alvie came to Tipton to visit Mike and Denise. It has been a few years since I’ve seen him since we dont deliver corn to your area anymore, but had many enjoyable visits over the years. I will always remember Alvie for his quick wit and warm personality. My thoughts and prayers are with you one and all. Brett Eggert

  5. To all of the Winter family we extend our sympathy. I have many great memories of Alvie giving all of us a hard time as we were growing up. Always many laughs. From all of his words of wisdom the ones that I have used the most with my own kids and their friends is ‘it is the sleep before midnight that counts!’ Our prayers go out to Joanne, Mike, Jackie, Donna and Diane.

It has been so long since we have seen each other, but I do remember when all of us kids we sure had alot of fun times together. Sam and I send our prayers to you at this time.
