Alfaretta N. Waters age 91, of Petersburg, IL, formerly of Alta Vista, IA died peacefully of natural causes on April 28, 2008 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. Alfaretta Naomi Waters was born January 25, 1917, near Bassett, IA, the third child of Alfred Leroy and Maude Verna (Springer) Young. She graduated from Colwell High School in 1934. On January 27, 1934, Alfaretta married Herbert H. Waters in Bethany, MO. They kept their elopement a secret until she graduated from high school that spring. The couple first farmed near Marble Rock before farming in Chickasaw county near Alta Vista for approximately 40 years. In 1976 they retired from farming and moved to Alta Vista where they lived for more than 20 years. For the last five years of her life she lived with her daughter in Petersburg, IL. Alfaretta had many interests in her life. She liked to fish, garden, bowl, paint, write poetry, quilt, collect antiques, crochet and bake. The greatest love in her life was her husband, Herbert, and she was the most proud of her eight grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca (James) Hart of Petersburg, IL; son-in-law James Lockwood of Hiawatha, IA; grandchildren Herbert Timothy Lockwood of Council Bluffs, IA, Randy Jon Lockwood of Cedar Rapids, IA, Pamela Ann Evans of Kalona, IA, Eric Dee Lockwood of Marion, IA, James Steven Lockwood of Hiawatha, IA, Melissa Joyce Lockwood of New York, NY, Andrew James Hart of Stockholm, Sweden and Allyne Young Hart of Murfressboro, TN; many great grandchildren; and one sister Cleo Mae (Wendell) Cross of Cedar Falls, IA. Preceded in death by her husband Herbert, daughter Marilyn Joyce Lockwood, her parents, three siblings Glen Alfred Young, Edith Pauline Thomas and Helen June Mehman Hale. Cemetery: She will be buried next to her husband of 66 years in Union Cemetery at Alta Vista, IA. Visitation: Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Service: Funeral services will be 2:00pm on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home Chapel in Elma, IA. Pastor Pam Kranzler will officiate. Pastor Kranzler serves the Elma United Methodist Church where Alfaretta was a member for many years.
