Agnes S. Cerwinske age 93 of Alta Vista, IA, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton, IA. Agnes Sophia Heying was born on November 23, 1915 to Henry and Elizabeth (Holthaus) Heying in Winner, SD. As a young girl she moved with her family to a farm west of Alta Vista. Agnes attended and graduated in 1932 from St. Williams Catholic School in Alta Vista. Agnes was united in marriage to Mathew Cerwinske on October 15, 1935 at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Alta Vista. The couple farmed west of Alta Vista until they retired in 1965. Agnes continued to live on the farm until entering Colonial Manor in 2004. She worked as a nurses aid for several years in Elma and New Hampton. Agnes enjoyed crocheting, quilting, and traveling. She was a member of St. Bernards Catholic Church and Rosary Society. Agnes is survived by six children Matt (Evelyn) Cerwinske of Champlin, MN, Punk (Jean) Cerwinske of Alta Vista, IA, Ron (Carol) Cerwinske of Ramsey, MN, Marlene (Roger) Blocker of Hampshire, IL, Tom (Barbara) Cerwinske of St. John, IN, and Bob (Sue) Cerwinske of Lake City, MN; one brother Mike (Arlene) Heying of Alta Vista, IA; 18 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two sisters Gert Freidhof of Elma, IA and Alice (Ray) Freidhof of Waterloo, IA; two sister-in-laws Marie Heying of Alta Vista, IA and Rita Heying of Ionia, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Mathew on September 21, 1990; two sisters Eleanor Webb and Genieva Heying; four brothers Norbert, Linus, Andrew and Louis. Cemetery: Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Alta Vista, Iowa, with Matt, Punk, Ron, Tom, Bob Cerwinske and Roger Blocker serving as casket bearers. Visitation: Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma with a scriptural wake service at 5:00 pm and a rosary at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home in Elma. Service: Mass of Christian burial will be at10:30 am on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at St. Bernards Catholic Church, in Alta Vista, Iowa with Father Ray Atwood as celebrant.

  9. To the whole Cerwinske family, you have my sympathy and prayers. Agnes always treated me as a VIP guest when I stayed overnight at her house with Carol and Ron. She lived her life the best way she knew how, and her family, was her life.
