Agnes Gebel

Agnes M. Gebel, age 89 of New Hampton, IA, died Sunday, August 25, 2019, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2019, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Washington with Rev. Brian Dellaert celebrating the Mass. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Washington. Friends may greet the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 29, 2019, at Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in New Hampton. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church in North Washington on Friday. Agnes Marie Gebel was born on November 27, 1929, in New Hampton, IA, the daughter of George and Agnes (Denner) Dockendorf. She obtained her education in North Washington and graduated from North Washington High School in 1948. After high school, she began working at the Square Deal Grocery Store in North Washington. When a customer named Bob Gebel came into the store looking to purchase some lunch meat, he stopped and asked Agnes on a date. The couple was married on November 20, 1951, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. To this union four children were born; Cathy, David, Joe, and Chris. The couple moved onto an acreage on the north side of North Washington where they raised their family and farmed together. Agnes had the beloved job of raising her children and enjoyed the years spent watching them grow. She spent time helping on the farm with every aspect that was necessary to make sure things were done. Agnes had a large garden that she would plant yearly. She harvested her garden and canned the produce so it would feed her family throughout the year. Agnes was an excellent cook and was famous for her delicious pies. She enjoyed having company over for dinner. No one ever left with an empty stomach. She taught religion classes for many years at Immaculate Conception Church and spent time assisting with the Catholic School lunch program in North Washington. Agnes was a longtime member of the North Washington Rosary Society. Agnes enjoyed playing cards, dancing in her younger years, and visiting her relatives. She loved when her family would drop in to spend some time with her. Agnes is survived by one daughter, Cathy Humpal of Lawler, IA, three sons, David (Jackie) Gebel of Aurora, CO, Joe (Donna) Gebel of Jesup, IA, Chris (Lisa) Gebel of Charles City, IA; eight grandchildren: Stephanie (Ryan) Tangen, Jeremy (Mikaela Reth) Humpal, Carrie (Nolan) Herring, Eva (Rich) Gebel, Melissa (Loy) Saysirisanh, Adam (Megan) Gebel, Lacy (Dan) Schoenfeldt, Mandy (Lucas Sisson) Gebel ; and eleven great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob in 2011; two brothers, Harold Dockendorf in infancy, Ray (Lenore) Dockendorf; one sister, Florence (John) Nosbisch; grandson, Justin Gebel.
