Born on October 17, 1936, in the welcoming community of Charles City to John and Ruth (Burdge) Tolliver. Peggy’s life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and dedication to her family and friends.
Peggy, a graduate of Charles City High School in 1955, was known for her bright mind and amiable nature. She furthered her education at a business school in Des Moines, which paved the way for her first employment at the Floyd County Treasurer’s Office in Charles City. Her family fondly remembered the tales of her daily walks to work, elegantly dressed and determined, braving the snow “in high heels from 6th Avenue all the way to the courthouse”.
Her life took a delightful turn when she met her beloved husband, Gordon, thanks to a blind date arranged by her employer. The connection was instantaneous, and the couple wed on September 8, 1957, at the First Methodist Church in Charles City. Together, they built a life founded on mutual respect and joy until Gordon’s passing in 2014.
After marriage, Peggy embraced the role of a homemaker with grace and enthusiasm. She created a warm and nurturing home, always prioritizing the well-being of her family and rural community. She was involved in the Riverton Homemakers, Junior Federated Women’s Club, and she was an active participant at the Trinity United Methodist Church. She was known for her cooking ability and providing nourishment around the family table for the farmers, especially during harvest season.
Peggy’s interests were as varied as they were engaging. She had a passion for ceramics, found solace in her garden, and took pleasure in shopping—a testament to her appreciation for the finer things in life. Her dedication to her family was evident through her involvement in 4-H, attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, and sharing her favorite Christmas cookies, famous cinnamon rolls and brownies with thick fudge frosting.
In her later years, Peggy continued to contribute to her community through various odd jobs. She found joy in playing slots with her cousin, Jerilyn, traveling out West with her husband, and bringing a smile to those around her with her humorous phrases. Peggy’s spirited nature, strength and generous heart left an indelible mark on everyone she met, especially her favorite staff at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, where she resided for the past ten years.
To describe Peggy as loving, spirited, and generous is to capture just a glimpse of the incredible woman she was. Her legacy is one of enduring love, ceaseless giving, and the ability to find humor in the everyday. She lived a life that was as rich in experiences as it was in relationships, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Peggy is survived by her sons Mark (Deb) Bonzer of Charles City and Scott (Leslie) Bonzer of Nashua; daughters Suzan (Bob) Simmons of Sheffield and Lisa (Wayne) Koehler of Charles City; sister Dorothy (Dave) Albright of Lisbon; grandchildren: Chad (Melissa) Simmons, Holly Simmons, Zach (Kristen) Bonzer, Megan (Ben) Rottinghaus, Michael Koehler, Kaitlyn Porter, Andria (Holden) Hillegas, Nicholas (Kayla) Koehler, Ethan (Krista) Bonzer, Alex (Mattie) Koehler, Rylee (Tanner) Peterson; great-grandchildren: Jonathan (Bekah), Jessica, Eli, Charlie, Noah, Latham, Eugene, Bodie, and Isaac; 3 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild on the way; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Ruth (Burdge) Tolliver; stepfather Lloyd Koehler; husband Gordon Bonzer; grandson-in-law Kyle Porter; and nephew Gary Bonzer.
