Marvin Leo Balk, a lifelong resident of Lawler, IA, and a cherished member of the community, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on July 8, 1944, the son of Leo and Evelyn (Bouska) Balk, in the same town he would come to shape with his gentle spirit and dedication to the land, Marvin was a man whose life was defined by the quiet strength of his character and the depth of his commitment to his work and interests.
After graduating from Turkey Valley High School, Marvin embarked on a life dedicated to farming. Working alongside his twin brother Melvin, he not only cultivated the land but also nurtured a deep passion for livestock. His care for his cattle was a testament to his kind and gentle nature, and his farm was a haven for not only his beloved cows but also the numerous pets he cherished over the years, including dogs, cats, and even deer.
Marvin’s approach to farming was marked by a profound respect for the earth. He was a true steward of the land, always ensuring that his practices respected and honored the soil he held dear. His philosophy was simple yet profound: to find beauty in the little things and cherish them. This ethos was evident in every aspect of his life and work.
His Christian faith was a cornerstone of his existence, providing him with guidance and comfort throughout his life. Marvin’s beliefs were reflected in the kindness he extended to all living things and the care with which he treated the world around him.
In addition to his farming, Marvin had several hobbies. He found great joy in attending farm sales, where he would eagerly add to his collection of equipment. Alongside his brother, Marvin took pleasure in restoring old tractors and farm equipment, a hobby that allowed him to combine his love for agriculture with his skillful hands and inventive mind. Moreover, he was an avid collector of ERTL toy tractors, a passion that brought him much happiness and a sense of connection to the farming community.
Those who knew Marvin would describe him as the epitome of kindness and gentleness. His presence was a comforting one, and his legacy is one of love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the things he held dear. Marvin’s life was a testament to the power of quiet strength and the impact one individual can have on their community and the land they love.
Marvin is survived by his twin brother, Melvin Balk of Lawler, IA; sister, Marvelene Schmitt of Fort Atkinson, IA; sister-in-law, Neoma Balk of Waucoma, IA; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joe and Allen Balk; and brothers-in-law, Ernest Schmitt, and Jene Smith.
