Kenny was born on February 19, 1946, to Raymond and Matilda (Brincks) Hackman in New Hampton. He was the youngest of the Hackman’s three sons, and he attended St. Mary’s Catholic School through the eighth grade before attending New Hampton High School, where he was a member of the Class of 1963.
During high school, Kenny held down two jobs — working as a delivery and stock boy at Hauth Drug and also working at Super Sweet — and he never lost that strong work ethic.
After graduating from high school, he began a long career as a carpenter — first working with Jack Rosauer, then moving to Stolz Construction before joining his brother Donny and forming D&K Cabinet Shop.
He helped raise five boys — Scott, Paul, Josh, Dan and Kyle — and they had a fun dad who liked going boating and snowmobiling with his boys. Kenny, though, also taught them they had to “earn” what they wanted. He provided for them, but when they wanted things like a dirt bike, for example, they had to pay their share.
Kenny met Janet Buhr on a blind bowling date, and we’re not sure what the bowling scores were, but we will tell you that Kenny that night met the woman of his dreams, and on July 29, 1989, the two exchanged vows, beginning a marriage that lasted more than 31 1/2 years.
The family grew to include seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and Kenny loved spending time with them and attending their school activities. He was the spoiling kind of grandpa, and he would do anything for them.
Kenny was a longtime member of the New Hampton Fire Department and he served as both the second and first assistant chief for a number of years. He also was a longtime member of the New Hampton Lions Club, where his carpentry skills were put to use on a variety of projects around town and where he would tell you that “you can’t have the Lions breakfast without the pancake batter.”
After turning over the business to his nephew, Bob Hackman, Kenny worked for his son Paul at Midwest Flooring before retiring in 2013, and a year later, Janet and Kenny moved to Ankeny.
In his later years, he loved putting together jigsaw puzzles, and there wasn’t a puzzle that ever stumped him.
Kenny will be dearly missed by his wife, his boys, his grandchildren, his great-grandchildren, his friends, and the community he called home for so many years. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, teaching the young men he raised important values and the importance of serving the community.
Survivors include his wife, Janet of Ankeny; five sons; Scott (Missy) Hackman, Paul (Teresa) Hackman all of New Hampton, Kyle (Megan) Hackman of Cedar Falls, Josh (Crystal) Culbertson of Nevada and Dan (Anna) Culbertson of Ankeny, IA; seven grandchildren, Carly, Brooke, Sierra, Payton, John, Kinnick, and Micah; two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Evelyn; one brother, Roger (Glenda) Hackman of Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donny (Kathy) Hackman, and his in-laws, Kenneth and Helen Buhr.
