James was born on April 23, 1935, to Edward and Evelyn (Quirk) McGrane. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith, which remained an important part of his life. He grew up alongside his brothers, Merle and Lavern.
He graduated in 1954 and later proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from February 1956 until February 1960. During his years of service, he was stationed in France and Germany, experiences that broadened his perspective and remained meaningful memories throughout his life.
Following his military service, James worked as an exterior painter. He was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to doing a job well. In 1986, he contributed to the Elma History Book, “Those Were The Days”, a reflection of his deep interest in preserving stories and local heritage
James had a lifelong love of reading, particularly books on politics and history. Though he was often quiet and reserved, those who knew him well will fondly remember his boisterous laugh that could fill a room and bring a smile to others. He found contentment in simple things: a good book, thoughtful conversation and his faith
Jim is survived by his brother, LaVern McGrane of Elma; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Merle and wife Gladys; and his sister-in-law, Donna McGrane.
