Edna Carol Ann Shinstine was a woman passionate about family and faith. Her final moments were spent surrounded by the warmth of her family, praying the Rosary, a testament to her lifelong devotion to her faith.

Born on March 25, 1933, to Charles and Emma (Otteson) Kriz, near Lawler, Iowa, Edna was the youngest of three children. Her early years were spent in the tranquillity of rural New Hampton, Iowa, where she developed a profound appreciation for the simple pleasures of country life. Edna’s education began in a country school, which she attended through the 8th grade, forging a path to her future through the fields of her family’s farm.

From an early age, Edna cultivated a reputation for hard work and culinary excellence. At just 16 years old, she honed her skills as a waitress and pie maker at the local Cafe on Main Street.

Edna found love in Don Shinstine on a double date. Their romance blossomed, and the couple sealed their union on June 20, 1951, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Hampton.

Together, Edna and Don embraced the farming life, tending to their land in rural New Hampton and Frederika. Their home was filled with the laughter and love of their eight children, whom they raised with unwavering dedication and a spirit of adventure, taking them on annual summer vacations.  Edna and Don also enjoyed dancing their way across northeast Iowa and their many trips to Branson, MO.

After retiring from farming in 1990, Edna and Don settled in New Hampton, where they continued to cherish their time together and with their family. Edna’s roles in life were as varied as they were vital: a devoted farm wife, a nurturing mother, a compassionate caretaker, a diligent gardener, a skilled seamstress, and an exceptional cook and baker.

Edna’s faith was the cornerstone of her existence, guiding her as a lay minister in her church, where she taught religion and brought communion to the homebound. Edna’s grandchildren were the joy of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them, imparting wisdom and love in equal measure.

Edna’s hands were rarely still, always occupied with the work of her garden, different forms of crafting, like sewing, cross-stitching, and quilting, or the preparation of a meal that would bring her family together around the table. Her gentle spirit, loving nature, and faith-filled heart were the threads that wove the tapestry of her life, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her and loved her.

Edna Carol Ann Shinstine lived life with grace and an unwavering commitment to the values she held dear. Her legacy will continue to flourish in the lives of her family and the many hearts she touched.

Edna is survived by eight children, Norman (Sue) Shinstine of Dunkerton, IA, Everett Shinstine of Ionia, IA, Donna (Gene) Brincks of Fredericksburg, Charlotte (John) Brincks of Lawler, IA, Sheila (Roger) Kirkvold of Winona, MN, David (Pam) Shinstine and Dean (Brenda) Shinstine of Waverly, IA, and Debbie (David) Lensing of Nashua, IA; 24 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 8 great, great-grandchildren.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don, in 2017; daughter-in-law, Beverly Shinstine, in 2023; brother, Lloyd Kriz; brother in infancy; and great-granddaughter, Lily Kubly.

  17. I just watched the video and did a lot of reminiscing along with the pictures. Don and Edna and all the Shinstine family have a special place in the hearts of many of the Quigley’s. God Bless all of you in this time of sorrow. Edna was special but she has passed it down to her children. Her kindness and faith flows threw her children, and I am fortunate to know them. A great video and I am sure I will reflect on it again. I remember back when Debbie, Dean and David were so small and seeing them in the video was timeless. God Bless everyone. I will think of Edna with fond memories quite often from being neighbors at Frederika to neighbors in New Hampton.
