David Robert Carter, known affectionately as David to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, in Waverly, Iowa, at the age of 78. Born on October 14, 1946, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Robert and Leona (Riggs) Carter. David’s life was one marked by dedication, service, and an infectious zest for life.

David’s early years were spent in Nashua, where he attended local schools and graduated from Nashua High School in 1964. His strong sense of duty led him to enlist in the United States Navy shortly after graduation, where he served his country with pride and honor. Upon his honorable discharge, David returned to his roots in Nashua, where a chance encounter with Charissa Schrage at the Townhouse would change his life forever. The spark between them was undeniable, and they were married on April 24, 1976, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, embarking on a journey together filled with love and companionship.

David’s professional life was as an electrician, a career that began at R Electric in Charles City. His hard work and dedication were evident, and he eventually joined the team at the University of Northern Iowa. For 29 years, David served as a trusted and skilled electrician, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and excellence in his work.

A devout Christian, David lived his faith through his actions and his interactions with others. He was a man who exuded warmth, always ready with a friendly smile and a helping hand. His adventurous spirit and sense of humor made him a beloved figure in his community and among his colleagues.

David’s love for the outdoors was a cornerstone of his life. He found peace and joy in fishing and camping, reveling in the camaraderie and lifelong friendships that he forged around the campfires of Iowa’s campgrounds. His passion for the open road was embodied in his cherished Harley Davidson Motorcycle, and he proudly attended the Sturgis, South Dakota, Bike Rally for over half a century, a testament to his adventurous spirit.

Those who knew David will remember him as a man who lived life to the fullest. He was adventurous, funny, and friendly—qualities that drew people to him and made him a cherished husband, friend, and member of his community. His laughter and stories will be deeply missed, but his legacy of joy and friendship will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Guestbook

  1. So sorry to hear of the passing of Dave. If the VFW can be of help please contact Joe Osterholm VFW Post commander 641-512-4672, or Arnie Boge 641-330-8861.

  2. To Dave’s family and friends: Let it be known that I was one of many who enjoyed the benefits of Dave’s many hours and hard work organizing and executing our camping group rallies. Not once, not twice, but for several years, even after age made the work arduous, Dave carried the load. Thanks, my friend, Dave, may your reward be great.

  3. Such a gentle soul. It was a privilege to witness his strength and courage. My deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved David. May he rest peacefully in God’s grace, mercy and glory.

  4. I met Dave at the Townhouse in 1973 when I was working for White Farm in Charles City. He offered me a ride one night on his Harley. That was exciting but never again. Even Earl Martin got a laugh when I returned to the townhouse. I loved Dave’s stories I never thought he would become a cousin in three years later. He got married same year I did (to my cousin Charissa Schrage). RIP good buddy

  5. My deepest sympathies to his family. I met Dave back in 1996. He was the UNI locater and I was the electrical superintendent at ROTH. He knew where every underground utility was on the entire campus. May he rest peacefully in God’s grace.

  6. Charissa and family,
So sorry for your loss. I enjoyed talking with David at past family gatherings. He told me a few humorous stories. I’m glad you had one of the good guys as your husband, Charissa. Cherish the memories. May God grant you peace in the days ahead. Love Patsy
