Arlene Theresa Boeding was born June 28, 1933, in New Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of Reynold and Adeline (Burgart) Ries. She attended country school, then went to high school in North Washington where she was a 1951 graduate. At a dance at the American Legion Hall in Lawler, Arlene met her future husband, Donald Boeding. On October 12, 1953, the couple was married at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington. To this union, four daughters and three sons were born.
Arlene and Don worked some years on a farm west of Lawler. In 1955, the couple bought their farm north of New Hampton. She also spent some time working at First National Bank in New Hampton. Arlene and Don retired from farming in 1999 and moved to town.
Arlene loved music, farm animals, especially her horse named Jim, gardening, sewing, cooking, baking, and coffee group with friends. She always looked forward to visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had fond memories of her family trips to Lake Osakis, Minnesota, where many games of Hand and Foot were played. Arlene and Don also loved to travel and made trips to Italy, New Zealand, Hawaii, New York, Holland, and Germany.
She was a member of the 2x4 Card Club and Buzzin’ Dozen Card Club where they played 500. Playing cards was a pastime that she passed down to her children and her grandchildren. As a member of Holy Family Parish, Arlene served on the Parish Council, Rosary Society, and was a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a proud member of the League of Women Voters.
Arlene is survived by her children, Patricia (Tom) Junko of Lawler, Ken (Sandy) Boeding of New Hampton, Connie (David) Potts of Hugo, Minnesota, Lynn (Dee) Boeding of New Hampton, David (Barb) Boeding of New Hampton, Kay (Roger) Thiemann of St. Johns, Florida, and Diane (Tom) Fitzgerald of New Hampton; 25 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, with two on the way; two brothers, Cletus (Doris) Ries of New Hampton and Merle (Shirley) Ries of Cedar Rapids; one sister-in-law, Marian Rouchka; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, on September 30, 2018; her parents; sister-in-law, Alice Papenheim; and brothers-in-law, Chester Rouchka and Gene Papenheim.
Arlene was a dear friend who was kind, loving, giving and a proud mom and grandma. She was a hard worker, a wonderful cook and she loved to read. She enjoyed musicals and traveling and was a woman with strong faith. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
I have so many fond memories of both Arlene and Don, as they were frequent library users. We had many good conversations. She was proud of her children and grandchildren. Keep sharing your memories.
May the memories of your loved one console you in the days ahead. All our thoughts and prayers to her family. Jeanne and David Roder
