Roger Darrell Schmudlach

Roger D. Schmudlach, 90, of Fredericksburg, Iowa went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after a short illness.

Roger was born on March 7, 1936, to Henry Schmudlach and Henrietta (Immermann) Schmudlach.  Roger was the middle child of 3 sons who all loved baseball.

Roger started his education in a rural country school, and he graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1953.

He worked in the agricultural industry for many years and later started his own business, Schmudlach Feed Hauling, which he ran for a successful 21 years.  Roger hauled bulk and bag feed, and some of the 50-pound bags had to be unloaded by hand.  As a testament to Iowa values and Roger’s character, many co-op workers helped him unload the 50-pound bags in appreciation of his work ethic and dependability.

Roger loved playing golf and was on the Plum Creek Golf Course Board of Directors for many years.  Roger accomplished something that few have done in their golf careers: 3 holes-in-one!  With his short game, he was a highly sought-after member of most best ball teams.

Roger was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, and one of his fondest memories was the 2016 World Series Championship.

Roger was a volunteer firefighter for the Fredericksburg Fire Department for 22 years.  He also served on the Peace United Church of Christ Council and acted as treasurer.

Most importantly, Roger was an exemplary father to his 3 sons, Rick, Randy, and Ron.  He raised his boys with quiet leadership, humility, and a strong work ethic.  His legacy lives on in his family and many friends.

Roger is survived by his sons, Rick (Donna), Randy (Sandy), and Ron (Deb); grandchildren, Eric, Laura, Kelly, Adam, Amy, and Emma; and 9 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Betty Schmudlach.

He was preceded in death by parents; his special friend, Irene Royek; and brothers Donald (Marion) and Jerry.

Visitation will be on Thursday, October 8, from 5-7 p.m. at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in Fredericksburg.  A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 9, at 1 p.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg.  Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to support Peace United Church of Christ, Plum Creek Golf Course, and the Fredericksburg Fireman’s Association in Roger’s memory.
