Anita Koleen Atterberry, 75, of Greenfield, Illinois, passed away on May 5, 2026. She was born on August 23, 1950, in Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Bonnie (Branstetter) Harris. She lived a life marked by kindness, creativity, and a deep devotion to family and friends.
Anita began her education at a rural country school and later graduated from Nashua High School in 1968. Those early years helped shape the steady, hardworking, and thoughtful woman she became. She carried the values of her upbringing throughout her life, meeting each season with quiet strength and a gentle spirit that touched those around her.
She began her career as a Nurse’s Aide, serving for many years at New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Her work reflected the caring heart she was known for, and she gave her best to those she helped. She later began working at Klunders Kafe in New Hampton, where one evening she met a truck driver named Jim Atterberry. A conversation at work led to a lasting love, and the two were married on April 17, 1993, at the Republic Community Church in rural Nashua, Iowa. Together they made their home in Greenfield, Illinois, Jim’s hometown, and built a life filled with companionship, commitment, and shared memories.
Anita was a talented sewer whose hands created beauty in countless ways. She made more than 135 Christmas stockings for friends, family, and members of her community, each one a reflection of her generosity and skill. She found joy in the simple pleasure of making something meaningful and beautiful with her hands. Her creativity was not only a gift but also an expression of the love she carried for others.
She was also a devoted sports fan who loved to follow and cheer on her favorite teams. She was a proud and avid fan of the New York Yankees, Green Bay Packers, and Iowa Hawkeyes. Whether watching a game or talking about her teams, Anita brought enthusiasm and loyalty to the things she enjoyed. She also loved cats and always had a faithful companion by her side, finding comfort and joy in their presence.
Anita was competitive and enjoyed playing cards and board games, especially when she could spend that time with her family. Those moments together were among her most treasured. Her family was the center of her universe, and she always put them first. She gave her love freely and consistently, and her presence was a source of comfort, laughter, and strength to those who knew her best.
One of Anita’s greatest treasures was her daughter, Heather, whose love and companionship brought her endless joy and pride. The bond they shared was deeply special—built on unwavering love, trust, and understanding—and was a source of strength and comfort throughout her life.
Those who knew Anita will remember her as creative, loving, and kind. She lived her life with a caring heart and a giving spirit, and she leaves behind a legacy of warmth and devotion that will not be forgotten.
Anita is survived by one daughter, Heather (Jeff) Loyet of Greenfield, IL; one step-son, Jamie (Sue Smith) Atterberry Jr. of Belleville, IL; five grandchildren, Kevyn Frantz, Levi Atterberry, Stephanie Atterberry, Brandon Atterberry, and Mackenzie Atterberry; three great-grandchildren, Poppy, Brighton, and Addie; two brothers, Wayne Harris of Rome, GA, Klel (Shelia McKenna ) Harris of Charles City, IA; two sisters, Edette Dresko of Longs, SC; Shureen (Mike Shaw) Hoffman of Charles City, IA; one sister-in-law, Lynne Harris of Fredericksburg, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim, in 2024; and one brother, Kevyn Harris.
